Sumiko MMT Vs Fidelity Research FR 54 Tonearms
« on: 17 Apr 2012, 12:58 am »
I currently own a Sumiko MMT and like it but I have a chance to purchase locally a brand new in the box FR 54 for $300.00 I would like to know if, in your opinion, the FR 54 is better than the MMT as far as built quality, performance, etc. I have several carts and can use both arms.

Anything you can share to compare and contrast will be greatly appreciated.

I can't shed any light on this, my experience is with the FR 64. But I think it will cost nothing to find out. Whatever you decide, if you wanted to sell one you wouldn't have any trouble getting your money back from the FR. If you like the FR better, that's about what the MMT is worth if you decided to move on. Knowing nothing about your carts and all the rest, it's hard to say more. This would make an interesting comparison. A used MMT is a genuine bargain IMO. On the other hand the FR in general, is reputed to be higher quality.

As a follow up here is some additional information:
Carts I have: Denon DL 103, Ortofon X3, Grado Red, Linn K5, Empire 808, AT 12S, AT 666. My TT is a Systemdek IVe (with external electronic control). My electronics are Wright Sound WPP 100c phonostage, BAT VK5i pre, VTL Compact 80 amps, and home made open baffle speakers (pics posted on this site in the OB section).

I am also looking to move up the scale regarding carts and purchase something better which can be selected to be a match with either one of these 2 arms. The MMT is good but I have an opportunity to purchase the FR for what I believe (please let me know if my belief is accurate) is a good price for what I perceive to be a great brand and unit (again please let me know if this belief is accurate as well on my part).
Thank you,

Is the FR a 10" or 12" arm?

I believe 10" but now I can't be 100% sure.

The FR arm is 6mm longer eff length. 245 vs 239. It's the 64 that has legendary status. The 54 is different than the 64 - take a look:

Depending on where you want to go with your upgrade, a lighter arm might give better results with some of the carts you currently own or might be contemplating. Whatever you do I suggest matching the cart and arm for best results. I don't know the mass of the FR. The 103 and the MMT is a great match and the MMT has damping so it minimizes mismatches with the others. I doubt if the Grado and ATs are at their best there. As I said, you might want to try it and sell the one you like least. It could be a sideways move or even a downgrade for all I know. I saw a number of 64s, 2 versions, but I never saw a 54.

I'm about to try a first generation Koetsu Black in a Sumiko MMT arm just as soon as I replace the headshell leads on a massive Micro Seiki BL91 table.  I'll be comparing it to a Nottingham Horizon table with a Grado Signature Reference in a modified Rega arm.
