noisy neighbours
« on: 13 Apr 2012, 03:05 pm »
hi! am unforunately am having to deal with a noisy neighbour who isn't responding to polite requests to turn down their music.

Fortunately i have 2x28bsst, bp26 and a pair of kef reference 207/2. i think some users of this forum have the same setup. do you know at what volume setting a 400w rms output is reached? i think this is the max power handling for these speakers. i've never turned the dial above 10 o'clock

thanks!

Reminds me of story. When you're old all you got is stories. So any way, back in the day when I lived in apartment my neighbor complained about my music. Since he was generally a jerk, I put on my Phillip Sousa albums and cranked it up! Well he called the State Police. Fortunately the cop was a former Marine. He laughed like hell, especially since I had "Semper Fi" playing when he knocked on the door. To make a long story short, I had to turn it down. So, the moral of the story: Don't start a war you can't win. Call the police and let them deal with it.

My first system was a pair of LaScala Horns in a condo apartment and the older lady downstairs was always calling me and demanding that I turn it down (I was young and a real jerk).  One day she called and said "TURN THAT CRAP DOWN OR I AM GOING TO GO INSANE!!!!!"

I said - "too late - I turned it down an hour ago!!!"

low power and high distortion are going to hurt the speakers more than the clean high power you have. 11 or 12 should be plenty loud.not to say you should get into a pissing contest with him

Not audio related, but we had thin walls in a condo, and could clearly hear the big Harley-type guy arguing with his family.  It was great entertainment.

One day he was screaming for an answer from somebody in his family, so we yelled the answer through the walls.  And then hauled ass out of there.

It is truly a magic that how did I survive by now.I could be killed by someone for sure.My problem was both wires, screws, wood, fire and loud music.
Here is some best of the best of Prelude
Back in old days at the age of 17 I had a complete active system. All DIY and every thing on aluminum pices but no box or marks and only one person could play the system and it was me.Every thing was getting dusty and I had to vacum it once a week. One day I was out and when I came back home my mother called me from kitchen and said that we need to talk.I thought I am dead but I could not remember what I did wrong. She told me the radio station that serve the country does not have this much wires and electronics that you little guy have just to listen to music. Why you cannot be like your friends.Well she went in the room looking for vacum cleaner's header and got twisted with my wires and never find it and was not happy about that.I could hear this every day from her and neighbours(turn that crap down).
We knew a priest from my father side and One day he came over to visit us and I did not like him,so I thought for some cool entertainment and nobody was home.I told him come in they will be back soon.I asked him,do you like classical music? He said yes and I took him in my room.Same system with two 15" audax drivers on each side.I set up the song at the sweet spot and when the bass hit he almost fell down from chair and told me he better be leave.
The neighbour was knocking the door and when I opened the door she asked me if I am ok? She said that she felt that wall was collapsed.Any way she called  the police and Priest was gone. The funny part is when the police arrived the music still was loud and he asked me to turn it down.

Well, call me relieved.  I can tell by your spelling of neighbor you're not complaining about me.

For me the noisy neighbors are the ones with the dogs. And now there is a new dog right next door whose bark I can't stand. During the day between the four dogs they are constantly barking.

I have the luxury of being able to play my music loud. So being that I'm presently out of work I've been playing my stereo late at night to like 4 am in the morning. Occasionally I play the song Whole Lotta Love by Led Zep. The goal here is to get the neighbors dogs to bark while the owners are trying to sleep. I suspect that the whirling sound of Jimmy Page moving his hand to that device what ever its called does the trick.

Hopefully their dogs barking at night will prompt other neighbors to complain to the police and they'll have to put their dogs down. :smoke:

Maybe its better to just blow in a dog whistle? Nobody would hear that, except for the dogs.

You might be interested in one of these. GOOGLE up "Dog Silencers" the dog can hear it but humans can't. Variety of choices, some very affordable. Read the reviews before making any purchasing decisions.

I've been in this apartment for three years and have at times played my music, with sub, at some pretty good levels, even at night, and have never ever ever, not once, ever, had a complaint.

One of the reason's I've kept renewing. Good walls here, I never hear my neighbors either. I've been in apartments before where you can hear EVEYTHING, and even having my system at a very moderate level at night would bring pichforks.

Now, I've got planars, and no subs for the moment, so even cranked I doubt anyone can hear a thing.

Hah hah hah...
When i was young i played loud music. But i lived in a place full of other twentysomethings too. No problems.
My middle years were in a place which had problems with the upstairs folks now and then over 17 years. Some who just did not get the idea they lived with other folks next door. I am suprised no one was murdered.
Now, retired and in an 'over 55 only' building..  i make certain I play music quietly. And the bliss of no noise from my neighbors means a lot.

Trying to fight noise with noise will not work. The other party just does not care. And the fact they may just finally shoot you dead is a factor. So let the cops handle it. People can and do get shot or knifed over noise.

Reminds when I had my first ground floor flat in Montreal in 75 after moving from Halifax, the couple on the upper flat used to put their record player on repeat to play their latest 45s, so the same 3 minute song played for hours over and over at full volume, “Love Hurts” & “Love is the Drug” will be forever imbedded in my brain cells.
But things just got better (never a dull moment in Mtl), after a break which relieved me of my Dynaco A35s, Pioneer amp, turntable and my beloved Akai "8 track" recorder, (oddly they left my flute and sax, probably so I could play the blues) there was then a fire a few weeks later on the third floor. Well the water to put out the fire caused the ceiling plaster to collapse exposing the upper floor boards, so zero sound proofing, but after a week the tenants were allowed to move back in, never had a chance to miss my stereo as the couple upstairs had a local band move in equipment and all, nothing like live guitars, vocals and drums at club volumes blasting at 2 in the morning when you least expected it, needless to say even with my love of music, I moved.

You've got plenty of power, what you need to do is a little math.

Find the approximate distance from your cabinets to what you guess is the middle of their living area / where they are making most of the noise.

Convert the distance to frequency (wave length). Hook up a computer, fire up a tone generator, dial in the frequency, and the fun begins.

Or, you could just call the cops.
