FYI... To play 24/176.4 and 24/192 using the Enhanced Digital Output app you must have FLAC set to Native.

The settings are:
     FLAC     Native
     MP3      <greyed out>
     PCM      flac

Thanks mh....that was one of the changes I made in fact as part of all the suggested ones the fella posted about when introducing the toolkit app. I did all the server changes outlined and check them on updates and change any that have changed so those changes, the applet and the PS are the only ups I have to the stock touch.
I'm listening to some regular Mp3's right now and they sound even more compressed than before the applet, now whether thats because of the change or me just noticing it I'm not 100% sure but I did hear it enough to write it here as not normal so its from something....
I always question if I'm really hearing these changes but I see where others have noticed some of the same new qualities as I have so I'm going with it....LOL

just did the 3rd party app on stock touch and its a noticable improvement over the stock software.  Bass is improved as is detail and this is reflected in that I had to dial back the volume a couple clicks on my Mapletree pre into a Butler TDB-3150 amp.  I'm running the touch spdif out into a XDA-1 DAC.  One question, how do I restore the analog out if I want to use it? Do you have to uninstall the app?

I want the download, not the discussion, who has the link?

Big Red Machine

19 pages of discussion.  Where is the download page?

No download - I think you get it through the Touch apps directly, though I haven't done it yet myself.

how do you de-select something with that remote?

Read the first post by Wayne and follow the link, it will tell you all you need to know!

Don't use the remote. Use the touchscreen on the Touch itself to select the third party app section from the menus. It is extremely easy to use.

Gosh, I didn't want to have to think but I got it.  Will I now be able to use the USB output if I get a dac capable of usb duty?

I must have done something right because it booted right up (with the obligatory warning message).  Once done, I can toggle between analog and digital, digital only and usb codec with my remote.  It does reboot when you change, but that's not a big deal.  Sounds a bit more relaxed and analog to me now...which is a good thing.

Hibuck.....I got the same thing, I can toggle back and fourth also....I think most folks can probably do it also but just haven't checked it out yet.

I did my install from the remote also by the way...

I installed it last night and successfully played back 24/192 files ripped from REM and Steely Dan DVD-A's.  It does sound noticeably better.  I'm using SPDIF to my DAC, not USB.

Is there any way to verify that 24/192 files are being decoded at the full sample rate rather than down-sampled to 24/96 by SOX?

Airborn

I figured it out and can now toggle back and forth between digital out only and digital+ analog in the Touch's settings menu.  :icon_lol:  The only downside is it reboots every time. :(

I don't have 192 stuff but I can chose dig vs analog.  No USB device connected so I cannot see that option yet.

Last night I extensively compared the SB Touch EDO via coax, toslink and usb into an Emotiva XDA-1 DAC.  I listened to 16/44, 24/88, 24/96, and 24/192 files and to my ear, USB sounds better than coax and toslink with everything I played.  This is the best audio I've heard from the SB Touch.

The USB connection played every sample rate I threw at it up to 192khz even though the XDA-1’s USB input is spec’d to 24/48.  96khz and 192khz files sound better through the 24/48 USB input than the 24/192 coax input.  Now the few 24/192 files I have are ripped from Steely Dan and REM DVD-A's, so I doubt the source material takes advantage of the higher sampling rate.  It's the 24 bit resolution I'm concerned about preserving.

Here’s my question.  Is the SB Touch sensing the 48khz limitation of the USB input and downsampling files via SOX?  Maybe something else going on between the SB Touch USB output and the DAC’s USB input?  I ask for curiosity’s sake because even if the USB connection is reducing or truncating higher sampling rate files, I’m sticking with USB.

Sounds interesting the differences you hear between the different outputs. Can you give us some insight in what you perceive as being better?

Thanks

Yes, the touch is sensing the specs for the usb input on the Emotiva.  I also have one and noticed that while the Touch still said it was a Flac file, it downconverted it to 705kbs instead of the 3000k+ it was recorded at.  It also downsamples high bit rate aiff.  But...through the other digital outputs, it sends the files through at native frequency.

Are you saying the Touch is downconverting the FLAC file based on the Emotiva's usb input.  That makes sense but how can you tell that it's doing that?

Even if the usb connection is downconverting, it still sounds better than the full bitrate coax connection.  I confess I'm using $5 usb and coax cables.  I guess I need to start trying better cables to see how that impacts the sound.
