older Bryston 9B SST 5 Channel Amp Value?
« on: 31 Mar 2012, 03:18 pm »
I have a non-audiophile friend who has an older 9b -circa 2002.  Its in fair condition.  He wants to get rid  of it but is not excited about doing an ebay type sale.

Coincidentally i was going to buy an emotive 5 channel for a basic small room 5.1 set up. Since this may be an opportunity,  Id like to offer him a fair value for the bryston. Ive seen them go from $1400- $2000 on audiogon and ebay.  Most sales seem to be in the $1700 dollar range.

Is a $1500 offer fair?  Its a little too much amp for my smaller HT set up but it would be nice and convenient for both of us.

thanks in advance for any opinions

I have always maintained that it is always better to purchase the largest power amplifier that you can afford - provided that the output is nice and clean. Always be nice to your speakers.

Mmmm... More power

Be well...

thanks for the replies thus far. Seems there may be some price variation b/c of different updates e.g. 9B>ST >SST

the amp here is a SST-THX 120. there are two currently on ebay with $3500 prices.  IS this accurate?  Ebay is always all over the map.

Take a look at Audiogon prices:

http://app.audiogon.com/listings?utf8=%E2%9C%93&search_text=Bryston

A 9B-ST asking price is $1725 and a 9B-SST2 is $5750.

Good luck,

John

Thanks for the reply. I did check audiogon.  This unit is an SST not an SST2  So again not sure of the value, hence the post.  Also not quite sure of the difference in SST2 v. SST

I believe that the changes between the 9B-ST and 9B-SST are more substantial than the changes from the SST to SST2, but James please correct me if I am mistaken.  $1500 for a 9B-SST is a great deal because it appears that the previous generation 9B-ST sells for more.  Good luck.

Best,

John

$1500 for a 9B-SST is a good price.

IMO, the going prices are:

9B-ST        ~$1800
9B-SST      ~$2700
