Bdp1 Get stuck on one song
« on: 31 Mar 2012, 09:07 am »
I talked my father in law into buying the exellent Bryston Bdp1 Bda1 combo.
When he sets it on repeat over a longer period for burnin purpose, it gets  stuck on one song and makes  a skipping sound  like old cd players used to do when they couldent red the cd . We have upgraded to the latest firmware , used several different usb memory sticks , all formatted to fat32 ,same problem. It is not the same song it gets stuck on .
I've had my Bdp1 player since december 2010 , it has always worked flawlessly .
Any ideas what the problem might be?

Hi

Over what period of time are we talking - more than 24 hours? Also is it the same song repeating or a list?

I have had what seems like your father in law’s problem for over 12months.  I love the BDP-1 so much I was willing to live with the problem rather than send the BDP-1 back to Bryston where the problem may not show up and I would be without my BDP-1 for some time.  :(

The problem always happened when I had a long playlist with repeat and random selected on MPad or MPod apps.  Finally, I recorded four short recordings of the noise on my cell phone taken over a period of a few weeks.  James Tanner heard these recording over the phone and suggested I talk to Chris Rice – Software Engineer at Bryston.  Chris was very helpful and knew exactly the problem I was experiencing but did not know what was causing the problem other than long playlists seemed to initiate the problem.  He said Bryston would have a work around fix in the next software update which should be very soon now I believe.

I understand the work around will be quickly shutting down the BDP-1 and restarting it automatically.  The only way now is to turn off the BDP-1, wait for 15 seconds or so and restart the BDP-1.  It never fails to start up again but it is necessary to wait for the BDP-1 to initialize.  I understand the fix will all be automatic and pretty quick too.  Once the root cause for the glitch is found I’m sure Chris will find a way to cure the problem permanently.  Maybe, you would want contact Chris Rice at  crice@bryston.com since more squeaks get more grease!!!

Yes repeat seems to be the issue - so we will have to work on that.  Not sure if it is at the BDP-1 level or the interface level.

I got a reply from Chris on the issue , very fast response  :D
I paste it here so everyone with the same issue see that Bryston is taking the problem seriously and working on a fix , hope that is ok , if not please delete post .

Hi Eirik,

We have identified an issue with the bdp-1, that if you attempt to playback continuously for an excess of 18 hours (this is just our experience i would imagine it would very from user to user) it begins to loop the same half a second of music.  This appears to be an issue with MPD and we have developed a system for detecting these pauses and to reset the effected software.  This is all handled atomically and you might notice up to 30 seconds of looping, a short one second pause then the music should resume.  This fix will be implemented in our next update some time this month.  We hope to eliminate the issue all together in the near future.

Cheers,
Chris
