These look pretty cool.  They have models that could power a Dodd Buffer or a Squeezebox Touch.   :thumb:

I emailed with him and it seems as though he'll even custom make stuff too.  Seems super nice and willing.  I like it!  Would love to hear some feedback.

They should update their "compare to" collection to include the Hypex HxR regulators (their PSRR number of -78dBV is well above that of the HxR at -110dbV).

If nothing else, their comparision to dry cell batteries explains why I've never liked the sound of them when compared to a well-designed AC power supply.

Used them in my Eastern Electric Minimax Dac last year.  Replaced the stock LM317,337 regulators to the opamps.  Benefits were quieter background and dynamics as claimed.  I have also used the Belleson regulators for tube dc heaters.

Worth noting, I had one regulator fluctuate output voltage on a project.  Contacted Belleson and they promptly sent a replacement after I verified a couple of measurements for them to compare, very nice folks.

Thorough documentation on their website with measurements convinced me to try them.   Have used the Tentlabs shunt regulators in the past.

He now has an updated website.

The measurements are pretty darn impressive too.  http://www.belleson.com/ripplerej.php

You could possibly object to the fact that he is not comparing corresponding products. Personally I would have preferred to have his products presented and leave out his competitors.

Understood.

Have you used any of his regs?

No, I design my own but no doubt his work is interesting but he won't show us anything.

Is that unreasonable?  It is how he makes a living right?   :dunno:

The patent is about using a JFET in certain position in order to get a low dropout voltage but the rest is since the tube era.

I met Brian Lowe, owner of Belleson at Canfest 2010 in Charlotte. He had a table there demonstrating his regulators and a discreet opamp of his own design. I was very impressed by the sound of the opamp and sat down to chat with him for a while. I encouraged him to bring the opamp to production considering how awful the 'discreet audiophile opamp' competition was at the time. Later I inquired about his regulators to use in my Buffalo2 DAC. We have emailed several times since then. I was a beta tester for the 1.2V regulator after I requested he design one for Buffalo DAC users. He and his wife run the company, I think. I had some shipping or payment issues once and she made it all work.

Compared to the stock switching regulators that come standard on the Buffalo DAC board, the Bellesons sound much better for dynamics and noise. Most people who have heard my DAC have liked it, and some of them decided to build their own using Belleson regulators. Belleson regs. are cheaper than Hynes, and available without a wait time. They are based on Walt Jung regulator design, so they are series regulator, not shunt, so they run cooler than shunts with similarly excellent performance.

Use these regulators with unregulated input voltage as recommended.

I want to use a 12V 2A belleson reg for my TT motor. I have read that TT motors really like fast current to make the best bass.

I was intrigued to see the Belleson comparison of the Optima Red Top 12V battery to the Belleson regulator. It implies that it would be a good PS for my 12V TT, and that Charles Altmann was onto something by recommending the Red Top battery for his BYOB amplifier. ;)

As one of my older regulator designs is used for comparison purposes on the Belleson web site I feel that the right of reply must be exercised in this discussion. I believe the presentation of inaccurate or misleading data to gain commercial advantage is not acceptable.

There is more to regulator design than one parameter specification. Transient response, settling time, noise, output impedance, operating bandwidth and, most importantly, the resulting audible performance are all part of the equation.

The Hynes shunt regulator used in the performance comparisons presented on the Belleson web site is less noisy than the Belleson regulator. Well that’s a plus factor in favour of the Hynes regulator. The scope timebase settings used to measure the transient response are different, but show no difference, so the resolution of the test is not good enough, and the transient response and settling time of the two regulators cannot be compared with such a limited test bandwidth. It is also irrelevant to present information about a product used outside of it’s specification. This regulator module was not designed for high power use. I have other designs that are more suitable for such a test. The shunt regulator used in the test is the first generation of this product and it has been revised with performance improvements twice since the first generation, so the comparison is invalid compared to current product.

Everyone is asking which is the best option regarding this or that product yet I see little if any attempt to find this out. If anyone wants to do definitive unbiased tests regarding audible performance between Bellelson regulators and Hynes regulators, I will be pleased to supply regulators for trial purposes.

That's what I thought also. It's also interesting that in the big super regulator test Belleson's regulators are far from the best.
The test can be found in the Linear Audio vol 4.
