BP1.5 Hum
« on: 28 Mar 2012, 06:58 pm »
I have a turntable hum problem.  The hum increases with volume so that tells me it is prior the BP26. I've tried different cables, grounds on/off and even another cartridge, still the same hum. The latest I've tried is just the the BP1.5 into the BP26, no turntable connected. There is a hiss that starts at about 1/2 volume then increasingly gets louder. It is a hiss not a hum. Is this normal for a phono preamp?? Would this contribute to the hum problem?? I know a cd player into the BP26 at any volume is dead quiet. Can anybody help??

Does the hum rise and fall if you move the turntable arm cables around?

Does the hum go away if you remove the cartridge?

Does the hum get worse if you attach the tonearm ground?

The hum stays the same if the cable is moved around.
The hum is less with the cartridge removed but is still loud.
The hum gets extremely loud with the ground attached.

It certainly sounds like a ground loop.
Does the turntable have a 3 prong grounded power plug or 2-prong?
What kind of table and arm and cartridge?

It is a 3 pronge plug, it is a VPI Classic 3 plugged into a BIT20. I have so much money invested into this system and this problem just makes it extremely frustrating!

Try using a cheater plug on the turntable power cord and see if that helps.

Hi Fullvolume,

You got me - maybe some of the more savy turntable folks will have some thoughts.

James,
So the hissing from the BP1.5 is normal with no turntable connected??

Well the BP-26 and BP 1.5 have a lot of gain.
ANY phono box is going to have a trace of low level hiss when turned way up. (depending on speakers etc..)
IF the hiss can be heard at normal listening levels, from your normal seating distance, then it may be more than usual.
(Standing next  to the speakers with ear two inches from tweeters, or with the volume control maxed out is cheating!)
PS: I am a high frequency nutcase. That is the #1 area a system has to be perfect for me to even sit and listen.

Anyway, The problem IMO guessing seems to be a ground with TT.
Other possible issues are the Bryston preamp power supply is too close to the Bryston phono box. Or the connecting cord from the power supply is tangled up with a regular powercord?

My Bryston BP 1.5 is pretty quiet from my Rega P5 with Benz Glider.

Also, I found the interconnect from the BP 1.5 to the BP-26 to be very critical.
I had a Kimber KCAG, but it was clearly too bright. Switching to a custom made RCA ((Vampire Tiffany style RCA) set using old (1980ish?)Mark Levinson wire really was the perfect cable. (the closest premade cable would be a midpriced Cardas IMO)

Finally, I wonder if the OP uses a power conditioner. The A/C in his place may be not so great?
I use and swear by big conditioners. Using a Furman REF20i for all my analog, and a big PS Audio P600 for the digital stuff.

Last, sorry the op's BP1.5 is not up to what he hoped for.
The dealer is the guy who should be working with the op at no charge over the issue. And if the op is not happy, well the dealer should work to make him happy. (this is assuming the op bought the BP1.5 new from a local dealer.)

James,
I hooked my turntable up to my Pioneer Elite SC07 using the ground wire bypassing all Bryston gear and there is no hum what so ever. Are you sure it can't be something wrong with the BP1.5??

We can certainly have a look at it for you if you wish - contact Mike Pickett - mpickett@bryston.com

The slight hiss is normal, the hum is not. Definitely contact Mike.
