anyone know what that was?

I realized listening to this that I have nothing like this in my collection. I've got rock/metal (the vast bulk), hip hop, classical, and jazz (which I just started over a year ago).

But don't really have anything cool like from the above video.

Just guessing here, Rclark, but I'll say that instrument is an oud.

Interesting.. Hopefully someone recognizes the tune or has something like it. The playing there is pretty damned good.

Right, it is a Oud(a mid-east alaúde or lute) with percussion, in a modern theme, proprably from Traditional CrossRoads label.
I would suggest popular songs from the Middle-East, as this Istambul 1925 CD:

or Kef Time:

or this Armenian on 8th Avenue NYC:

Many these CDs from Traditional Crossroads are historic recordings remastered from Shellac master discs, for a modern digital redording see this titles from Omar Faruk Tekbilek:

This is one of my favorite albums; Indian music meets Minimalism.  Each composer wrote a theme and then had the other compose the piece based on it.  It's good music, exotic but still accessible as it is performed by a traditional orchestra with some Indian instruments (and a singer) featured.

Cool Doug. This stuff'll be fun to mess with. What's that African stuff you were listening to?

Cool Doug. This stuff'll be fun to mess with. What's that African stuff you were listening to?

ali farka toure, toumani diabate (lotsa diabate's) and sunny ade are all africans.  nusrat was pakistani; vishna bhatt is indian, jerry douglas is one of the best (american) dobro players ever to walk the face of the earth.  michael brook is into electronic music; i need to get more of his stuff; he collaborates w/a lot of different folks...

i never saw ali farka toure; i have seen sunny and toumani.  awesome!  toumani has a relatively recent cd out w/taj mahal; it is excellent, imo...

not sure specifically what "african stuff" you were referencing; i like african music a lot; there's many others.  fela kuti, femi kuti, youssou n'dour, mahlathini & the mahotella queens, ladysmith black mambazo, johnny clegg and savuka, ebenezer obey, salif keita,  thomas mapfumo, hugh masakela, babatunde olatunji...  if you have internet radio, tune to wpfw early sunday morning, from 12am to 4am...

Nice, thanks for that.. now that my system is getting there, starting to look for other flavors, and some more refined music from other countries.

thanks Ericus, I'll add that to my list on Amazon.
