This master piese from Yes is really special.
The lyrics from
SOON:
Soon oh soon the light
Pass within and soothe the endless night
And waiting for you
Our reason to be here

Soon oh soon the time
All we move to gain will reach and calm
Our heart is open
Our reason to be here

Long ago, set into rhyme

Soon oh soon the light
Ours to shape for all time, ours the right
The sun will lead us
Our reason to be here
The sun will lead us
Our reason to be here

Harper Road by Sun Kil Moon (Mark Kozelek), from the 2008 April album.

A father singing about his young family. Creates a simply, idyllic setting in the first verse ("Blackberries ripe on the branches, her skin is burning, she bends to pick them..."), then moves to the wife's sickness and ultimately her death in the next several verses ("Sorrow came in floods this April..."), before closing, in the final verse, with a message to his daughter:  "My blood runs through my only daughter, her eyes, like mine, so wide with wonder. Be my joy, my light, my power. Be with me in my leaving hour."

No one writes a sad song like Mark Kozelek.

There are plenty of sad songs around but on a personal level, the one that does affect me deeply every time I hear it is the one mentioned in the opening post and for much the same reason, Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years.  So much so that I always think twice before I commit to playing it myself.

Another one that is not personal but tends to grab me, make me think deeply about being caught out by sudden and unnecessary death and appreciate life is Bob Dylan - Knockin' On Heaven's Door from the movie Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

the mention of bob dylan makes me think of "tangled up in blue", from his blood on the tracks album.

another song that comes to mind is the waitresses' "christmas wrapping".

Songs that portray courage and loyalty make me tear.  Dr Hook does a couple.

It's not so much the lyrics that get to me. It is the beautiful melody, with that great pedal steel slide guitar, that enters after the intensity of the chaotic 'war' instrumental section.

It's the way it resolves the previous section. It is musically cathartic. It is the drastic change in emotion that gets me.

But the lyrics are not very profound.

There are a few songs that supposed to make you guys tear are about the sun and the light.

Why do the sun and the light make you tear?

Light, sun, light, sun, light, sun....is it supposed to be sad or something?

Sun and light make me jump up and down and happy, not sad.

Relayer is the best album from YES in my opinion, unfortunately its sound quality are very poor, the recording was made by a mobile unit by Genaro Rippo, a Italian guy, look it is another low speed tape recording, so no SACD.

To me the lyrics talk about the return of Jesus, and the light is Himself.

I will agree with Bob in St Louis and Roymail. Eva Cassidy is the best singer I have ever been blessed to hear. Her voice is heavenly and she is a notch over every other singer, even Frank Sinatra.

Her story is very touching...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXU219b3Zdw

Eva was an amazing singer and great lady. I watched her perform many times.
A friend of hers and ours, songwriter and guitarist Roger Henderson, just passed away last year. They are truly missed.
I'd like to think they are making wonderful music together somewhere.

Again, it's not the lyrics, it's the melody that comes after a chaotic extended instrumental section depicting war.

The lyrics sound simple, but they are about the hope of peace after war.

Even if there were no lyrics in that section, it would still get to me.

That would be wrong. 'Gates of Delirium' is Based on Tolstoy's War and Peace, the song begins with a prelude, which leads into a lengthy instrumental section representing the battle. The final section ("Soon"), is a very gentle, soothing appeal for peace and hope which represents the aftermath of the battle.

Got it, there are tunes like that for me as well, no lyrics, like John Renbourn.

It's ok guys, real men do cry.  :P

Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years
Dan Fogelberg - Leader of the Band

Both choke me up because they make me think of my dad passing away way too young.  :(

always loved J.J.'s "Lament", but later I got the chance to listen to a lady sing it right from her heart. Brought tears to my eyes. Bill Wilson's "Black Cat Blues" is another good one

Dan Fogelberg does it to me too, Mitsuman.  I play "Leader of the Band" every year on Father's Day and never make it through the song in one piece.  Every first Saturday in May it was a tradition in our house to all gather around the TV late in the afternoon to watch the Kentucky Derby.  Always sometime during the day prior to post time I would get out "Run For he Roses".  As my daughter got older and she would be in need of a little encouragement from time to time I would tell her to run for the roses as a way of telling her to go for it.  Last year she got married and a couple months prior she began bugging me that I had to pick  a song for the father/bride dance.  I kept my choice a secret until we were on the floor and the sound of the steel guitar intro began to fill the room.  Her eyes began to fill with tears as did mine.  It will alway be one of the most emotional moments of my life.
