I've ordered RM40s as the stereo speakers for my system and an RM30C for my center channel.  Currently, I have Linn stereo speakers and a "matching" Linn center channel, along with Mirage rear speakers.  I have to say that the Linns actually sound quite good in my "new" house.  Even though there's a tile floor, the speakers sound great.  My girlfriend, who plays piano and likes classical music (among other genres) was impressed by the sound.  Sitting here at the computer, the system rocks out.  I'm listening to Johnny Cash, and it's clear and the imaging is very good in the sweet spot.

So, my VMPS speakers are to be here in a few weeks.  I'll post the results of a comparison between speakers.  Unfortunately, it won't be a direct comparison, as I'll be using different speaker cable (the Linn fronts are triwired, so I need to change this).  Also, I'm going to biamp the RM30C, but the Linn center channel is biwired but not biamped.

The rest of my system is as follows:  Jeff Rowland #10 amp for R/L speakers, Lexicon NT512 (basically, a Bryston 9B) 5-channel amp for center and surrounds, a Proceed AVP preamp/D-to-A, a Pioneer Elite transport (CD/DVD/DVD-A), an SV Sub (only used for movies), and a Monster power conditioner HTS 5100.

Since there are threads on reliability and finish of VMPS products, I'll try to comment on that, too.  I will not that the Linn speakers look great.  They're cherry veneer with matching L/R sides split down the middle.

Congrats on your purchase Bob.

Which finish did you get?  The newer 40's look to be a nice step up from my 40's in terms of bracing and finish.

Maybe we can get together before your speakes arrive and have you hear my system?

My first hi-end system had Linn speakers in it (Tukans).  I remember at that time thinking, "man, it can't get much better than this!"

Looks like you're getting the incredibly gorgeous piano black lacquer Mark Shifter RM 40's and the almost equally nice piano black RM 30 from Bud Bailey.  There is no one who doesn't like MLS piano black....

We have settled on $400pr as the premium for the mls finishes.
The crates for the RM40's are worth that much.

This is exactly where we all should have stopped!        Our first high end system!  Sooooooooo much $ could have been saved. 8)

Nah!!!!

The first anything is usually nostalgic and we remember it in more fond terms than it deserves.

I think back to my first car...1970 Chevy Impala.

Let's see, Audi S4 or Chevy Impala?

VMPS RM 40's or Linn Tukans?

Hi George,

Sorry about the delay -- I posted this during slight binge of Amaretto (sp?) and I forgot about it!  I guess I'm getting the braced versions.  Cool!  What about the glue trick?  Of course, that's no big deal.  Tukans are nice for being small.  My friend who got me into this listened to a ton of speakers before settling on the Linns.  I purchased them used from him, and he used that money to buy other speakers (I can't remember the name!).  We did a comparison on his all Proceed system between the two sets of speakers, and his "new" (these were also used) speakers sounded clearer to me.  I love these speakers for movies, and they do a good job on music, too.  I just think they lack detail in comparison.

As for hearing your speakers, maybe.  This new-to-me house has me working pretty hard, though.  I bought the house because the paint scheme is cool, it's on a nice piece of property, it doesn't need much (I though) in the way of repair, and it's relatively reasonable.  However, I've already rebuilt both valves for the showers and now I'm headed up into the attic to install new bathroom fans, as they're so loud I can't turn them on.  (Unfortunately, I think they vent into the attic, which isn't good, but I'll vent the new ones correctly).  After this, I'm installing an attic fan. I'm still not sure when my speakers are getting here, but I'll shoot you a pm as soon as I find out.  I'll call this week to see about setting up an appointment.  Next weekend, I have a wedding to go to on Sunday, and I need to finish whatever I don't do this weekend.  However, if I get the fans installed today, I might be able to do the ducting this week and the hole in the roof the weekend thereafter, so I'd have some time that weekend.  We are also supposed to take my friend's kids to see Shrek 2 next weekend, also.

Talk to you soon, and I'll report back once I receive the speakers and compare them to the Linns.  As a side note, I'm going to have 5 speakers that are rated to about 30 Hz each for a -3db point.  I think I'm crossing them over at 40 Hz during movies.  We'll see how that sounds!

BC said that all new speakers will be shipped with the glue on the passives.

If I were you, I would talk to BC about using lambswool behind the midranges.  It shouldn't cost much to have him add it at the factory if he likes it.
