VR5 Anniversary M/T bass cabinet mixup..
« on: 9 Mar 2012, 01:33 pm »
As you may know from a previous post, we had a flood in our basement and while in a rush to get my 2-ch system out of harms way I didn't mark which M/T cabinet goes with which bass cabinet.  The bass cabinets don't have a serial #, only the M/Ts and they are both the same #.  No doubt Albert voiced them stacked the way there were originally shipped but now the pairings are a guess.  Is this a big deal?

I would doubt it's a big deal. I'm not sure the M/T & bass modules are voiced together (they may be), but I'm certain the speaker system is voiced/measured as a set. Try it out and let us know if there discernible difference between cabinet combos.

Nope. VSA doesn't do matched pairs. They go the "Golden Unit Method" where each unit is tested against the reference unit in the factory. They're interchangeable.  :thumb:

Thanks guys but being your typical anal a'phile thought I should get clarification.  It's going on 3 weeks now without my music and I am deep into withdrawal...seeing gremlins and all sorts of nasties.  Looks like late next week at best and boy do I need a VSA-hit...big time

I stand corrected, but Jack's insight is even better.

I actually thought that as well Kevin. It was Albert that gave me the info when he and Damon were here. It does make more sense to do GU instead of matched pairs from a total quality assurance perspective.

Hi Gavin, Jack is correct - we do not build matched pairs. We use the Golden Unit method, wherein each and every speaker must match the response curve of the original prototype after it has been vetted. This insures that we can ship a replacement to a customer who has lost one of his cabinets due to some catastrophic event, without worrying about having to dig up the original curves from the customer's QC records.

Matched pairs are built by small-scale speaker builders that do not have access to high quality parts that come with a prequalified level of parts matching by the factory. Although building to the Golden Unit costs much more money, it is a better way to keep the quality constant.

Darn, that even sounds nice on Youtube, I can imaging how good it sounds in person.  Nice setup, Dimfer.

After a very long day of having carpet cleaners in and out, schlepping all the stuff from the garage downstairs to its home in the basement, I spent a good two hours re-placing my speakers, cabling ad infinitum...whew...then lastly polishing my piano gloss black cabinets (the VR5s AND my Velodyne subs)...ahhh.  Back in the sweet spot, even with an aching back...sweet  :thumb:

One of the painters that helped put us back together, bless his heart, asked if I paid a grand for my VR5 Annies.  I said yeah about a grand.  I figured not much point in confirming that I am indeed crazy  :?

Hey Albert, thanks for the reinforcement regarding Jack's comment.  I had little doubt that he was wrong

Hey Gavin,

Glad to hear things are getting back to normal for you! Water can be a real mess, glad it didn't mess up your beautiful Annie's too much. I guess once in a while they could use a nice polish.

On another note, my VSA Masterbuilt cables are really sounding great. I have around 200 hours in on them. The biggest difference that I'm hearing is more detail in the instrumentation. OK buddy, start putting some $$ away for a pair, they are well worth the price.

I hear you Henry but my trusty Verbatims are still sounding decent.  For a guy dangerously close to joining the fixed-income crowd, the mega buck purchases are becoming a thing of the past
