I like discs too.  However, the reality of the market is that sales of hard media are going down.  I started off with a Squeezebox Touch with upgraded power supply and using old WMA lossless files I had for an old Zune player along with a couple of hi-rez downloads.  At some point, I'll have more stuff digitized and then can consider more seriously an upgraded player.  It seems that the high end companies that seem to want to continue supporting disc playback are at the upper end of the spectrum.  Levinson has announced a DAC with DSD - but it is going to be $6k.  So the consideration is that you can get something like the BDA-1, BDP-1 and lots of downloads for the same price range.  There are not many high end companies with preamps or pre/pros doing DSD and there are more and more hi-rez PCM downloads available.

Here are a few of the articles about the reality of CD sales:

http://money.cnn.com/2010/02/02/news/companies/napster_music_industry/
http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/retail/u-s-album-sales-dropped-12-8-last-year-digital-1004137880.story
http://www.dailytitan.com/2011/04/the-inevitable-decline-of-cds/
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2038435/digital-music-file-sales-surpass-cd-sales-2012

I bought the BCD-1 when it first came out (my serial number was no. 98).  After the DAC was out a bit, I picked up a 3 week old BDA-1 at a great deal, I did not feel the need to keep the BCD-1.  I have a great CD transport for the BDA-1 (and I have about 10 transports between 4 systems) and it gave me the opportunity to have multiple digital inputs and get into an entry level player like the Squeezebox.

Lets not forget that the BCD-1 beats the vast majority of DAC + PC combos out there. Truly an audiophile product that was favourably compared to $10,000 CD players/DACs just 3 years ago.

I personally prefer physical media/artwork than DLs.  :) I will spend less money if that option disappears in the name of progress.

How about a USB stick with a hi rez DL in a case large enough for decent artwork?  :D

Very happy the BCD-1 came along when it did . I will probably never pursue downloaded files because I am of that group that needs to see the record spin.  :drums: :banana piano:

Absolutely, about a year ago i put the BCD1 and Ayre Acoustics C5xemp against each other and to my ears the Bryston was much truer to the sound of real music as i've heard it. The only caveat is that it was an expensive shootout for me but, in the end i came away with the best player.

Perhaps they might go up in price to reflect a new 'collectors' item status.

Actually I have offers at higher prices on any demo units we can find :thumb:  I think there may be a few around - I know I have 3 units at home in different systems.

Sorry, I meant the units currently on dealers' shelves. I have found with other brands there is usaully a price reduction following the end of a model. Perhaps this is not the case here due to the BCD1 being an on going desirable player :dunno:

I’m waiting, since I’ve bought the BDA-1, for a transport only unit from Bryston…
I think it’s 2 or more years ago that Bryston has discussed this theme in this Forum.

After hearing the difference between the analogue outputs of my Cambridge-Audio 840C to the BDA-1, I’ve never use the DA-converter of my current DC-Player.

When will Bryston have a decision to develop and produce a transport only or to decease this project?

Hi Raif

It has been discussed but I would say it is not something we will be doing soon.

I have over 4000 cd's and love the ritual of pulling it out and watching it spin on my YBA player.  I recognize the advantages of HD musical systems and suspect they will probably sound better than CD players.  Yet, I too am old school and love the physicality of the CD or record in front of me.  Furthermore, setting up, uploading Cd's into a HD system can be a pain in the a**, not to mention some HD's are better than others and have a shorter life span than others.  I guess what I am saying is that until the dust settles on computer audio and standards are set I will continue to enjoy my music through my CD player recognizing its sonic limitations.  I believe there are still a lot of people like me who love the physical medium and do hope future hifi shows don't end up being multitude of rooms with MacBooks pushing some DAC or another and a few turntables and no CD players scattered about,  because suddenly our hobby just got very boring, in my opinion.

Hi,
discussing the end of CD, we forgot about hi-res physical media like DVD-audio and SACD. I was very positive, when both audio formats were introduced. Nowadays they are rarer than vinyl and more expensive as well. I personally have some SACD, DVD-audio and dual disc. I will stick to physical media, no matter what it is CD, SACD, DVD-audio, Blu-ray .javascript:void(0);

I am new to this site and relatively new to Bryston equipment.  After reading this thread I am clearly behind many of you folks when it comes to downloading music, but I too am a little old school.  I recently purchased a demo BCD-1 and after having some issues that would not always repeat themselves I ordered a new unit and I picked it up a few days ago.  I am happy to say the new player does not have any of the issues and I have been really enjoying the unit.  It sounds like I might just made it under the wire.

I am still trying to get smarter on downloading and the Bryston offerings on that front.  So far I am mostly confused but making a little progress.  Recently I was considering pulling out my vinyl collection and purchasing a new turntable and then I went to listen to a demo of high resolution music and it was very impressive.

Welcome to the forum Chicago. Glad you are enjoying this great cd machine. I like it so much I bought an extra one as future backup. Did you keep the demo for spare parts? :thumb:

Thanks for the welcome.  No I used it as a trade for the new unit and they gave me full credit for the demo.  If I make any new expenditures in the near future it will probably be on used speakers.  I have my eye on a set of B&W 802's or a pair of 803's.  I am not sure I can get my better half to warm up to the 802 appearance in her living room.  The 803's are in black ash and I would prefer the Rosewood and of course the 802's are rosewood.    Over the last 18 months I have upgraded my equipment to a 4Bsst a B25 and the BCD-1 and I just purchased one set of balanced cables.  I did discover my speakers were a lot better than I ever thought they were.  It has been an educational experience and something I always wanted to do but it just never happened.

If I get in the speaker mode I will search the site for past recommendations for use with the Bryston amp/pre-amp.  I have heard the Bryston/B&W combo before and liked it, but I will be open to suggestions.
