Dawns Depot Maple Platforms

Hello,

I am considering purchasing a 18x24x3 Maple Platform from Dawns Depot as I am upgrading my VPI Scoutmaster to Super Scoutmaster with Rim Drive. My current top shelf of my rack is not large enough for the Super Scoutmaster.

Any opinions on these Maple Platforms?? I am currently using a Gingko Cloud 11 which will be too small for the Super Scoutmaster.

I would also like to install some threaded spikes/cones to the bottom of the Maple Platform. Any suggestions or recommendations as to what spikes/cones would work best? Or maybe something entirely different?

She also supplies Overstock.com and they often offer $1 shipping. Check the 3" thick stuff there. Also sometimes cheaper than direct from her.

I own about 10 of these 3 inchers, all from her/Overstock. You get get the finger grooves in the ends when using the cutting board purchase at O.

I installed four threaded brass inserts in the bottom of my maple platforms. This allows the use of threaded rod and Black Diamond Racing cones for footers which in turn makes for a very handy way to level the platform before installation of the turntable, cd player, etc.

I did this for a sub stand and amp stands as well. Pretty easy to do after a trip to Home Depot for the threaded inserts.

Tom,

I am using the Dawn's 15x20 beneath my non-suspended rim drive Trans-Fi TT which uses brass spikes/feet into brass cups hard coupled top of the maple. The maple platform rests on doubled up Iso-Pads similar to what Mapleshade sells for their 4" platforms. The rim drive motor base rests on 3 Herbie's thin Gungebuster dots. The shelf is a wall mounted IKEA 2x2 Expedit, which is very light weight. All this seems to work together rather well, much better than when I had it sitting on my wood/granite rack.

Does anyone think that there is an advantage (or difference) in the end grain boards vs. the edge grain boards? I would imagine the end grain board would have different properties than edge, but I am sort of lost when it comes to isolation platforms or footers/supports. I suppose it depends on how you use it, and what you are trying to get out of it.

I do know that the all maple neck in my fender jazz bass gives me incredible sustain . . . . way better than the old Squire Affinity maple/rosewood neck. But that's for creating sound, not killing it. This stuff really confuses me.

You want density without ringing. SOme swear by maple for its properties and tone. I can't say either way.

Somethng I've always wanted to try is to get two 2" thick boards and glue them together with GreenGlue to see if that would make for a super maple sandwich.

Actually in both cases you're controlling vibration. In the neck of a guitar the maple is adding to the sustain by erradicating vibration that would otherwise destroy it. In the case of a maple stand it's sort of te same game. Eradication of destructive vibration.

(I sure hope people don't find out I'm just making this up as I go)

Yeah, I was wondering if the maple was isolating the string and allowing it to ring out further (sustain), or resonating along with it to add to the sustain. This subject is way over my head but I figured I would bring it up anyway.

If it is density and isolation, then maybe the end grain would make more sense. Although I have a feeling that the wood quality and construction technique are just as responsible for the final outcome. Hey, now I've really lost myself!

Since any damn fool with a table saw, thickness planer and some clamps can build a maple platform, I would only buy one from a craftsman who guaranteed it won't warp or twist. Improperly cured wood can move in mysterious ways.

The 24" x 36" x 4" granite plate on the matching stand would make one helluva turntable platform for only about $335. I wonder what shipping would run?
