Denon DLA-100 cartridge bargain

Any of you who are thinking about trying a low output moving coil cartridge might consider this.  Vann's is selling the 100th anniversary edition Denon DLA100 (basically a better version of the famous DL-103) for $250.  It retailed for $500 and was made in a limited edition.  Mine arrived today but I haven't installed it yet.  Art Dudley has raved about the standard version of this cartridge.  I used to have a Denon DL-160 which I thought performed well above its price.

Fwiw, I'm not affiliated with Denon or Vann's.  I just thought someone else on AC might want to give this a try.  :thumb:

It's a great bargain, and as you said, slightly better than the 103...

Picked one up myself!

I would not beat yourself up about it. Just buy a stock 103 off ebay for $199. You'll still be $50 ahead of the game vs. $250 on the anniversary edition.

Stock 103 is not the same as the DL-103R (usually $379), which is what the anniv. cart is based on.

PM me if you'd like an anniv. cart with almost no hours on it.  I've got two, hate to see you miss out!

103R has six nines copper coils, an impedance of 14 ohms (the different coils result in the lower impedance), an output of .25 mV (again because of the different coils) and a gold coloured yoke.

103 has impedance of 40 ohms, an output of .3 mV and a silver coloured yoke.

Anniversary Cartridge has no six nines coils and an impedance of 40 ohms, an output of .3 mV and a silver coloured yoke.

At no time did Denon ever make any claims in any promotional material that the Anniversary cartridge was based on the 103R.

People can draw their own conclusions but the logical one would be that the Anniversary is based on the stock 103 and not the 103R. A 103 in a see through plastic body that weighs .2 grams more than a 103.

I guess that's just another example of not being able to believe what you hear from press briefings .

That was straight from the engineer's mouth.

I guess it's just another example of you always being skeptical of what anyone says....

Tonepub, how does the DL-103 (or R) compare to the SoundSmith MC carts?

Perhaps you just misunderstood Jeff.

You're just about the only guy in the world saying the anniversary edition is based on the 103R.

When it bears no resemblance to the 103R on a measured basis but matches up pefectly with the stock 103 using Denon's own published specifcations, shares all of the physical characteristics of the 103 and not the 103R, and is also identified in the mainstream audio press as being based on the 103 with confirmation from a named Denon director of product development, I think my skepticism might be warranted.

I have no problem with anyone buying the product but they should not be buying it based on misinformation.
