60 hz hum through tuner
« on: 3 Mar 2012, 11:07 pm »
Hello, all!

I don't listen to FM all that much, but this is driving me crazy.  In the past few years I have switched out as many as five tuners from my junk pile, and even paid for higher quality units, all to no avail.  dbx, Harman Kardon, Marantz, Creek, and who knows what else........same results.

I get a constant hum of what seem like 60HZ.  I've moved them around, tried different cables, different signal sources (cable, outside antenna, and Radio Shack dipole) with no improvement.   No power lines in the vicinity, upgraded power panel, new circuits, etc., and nuttin'.

All of the units have a two-prong plug.  Do I grind down the wider tab and try it 180 degrees out?

Ideas?

Thanks!

'brick

With five different brands of tuners I don't think that it's the tuners problem.  What to you plug them into?

Any one of the following four preamps:
B&K
Musical Fidelity (2 different models)
Rogue Audio 66 Magnum

Amps?
Hafler XL280
Parasound HCA 1000
Moscode 300

Thanks!

What happens when you take your gear to a friends house on the other side of the city?

Never tried it, but it's a thought.  I live on a hilltop in the woods, about 3 miles from a small town.  Certainly no structures around to interfere, and I have receivers all over the house.  No hum with any of them.
