Question regarding your new digital amplifier
« on: 13 May 2004, 09:58 pm »
Hi Kevin,

Any chance you might be able to custom make your amps natively with a lower gain  :?: , so as to be able to use tube preamps whose typical gain is in the 15-20 dB range. By "native" I mean without an additional resistor in the signal path to lower the gain, but maybe with simpler gainstage that gives lower gain in the first place.
The way your amp is right now, with less than 1 V input sensitivity and 33dB gain, looks perfectly suited for passive preamps like Django or Bent.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, but...
A Basie preamp would only use the first portion of its volume control before becoming too loud, making fine adjustment practically impossible.
Would be great to offer an amp with an input sensitivity of, say 2V for a gain of, say, 26dB, without sacrificing any of the original's sonics, or even improving it, by making its own gainstage simpler.
Thanks!

romandoc:   This is something that should be possible by modifying the amplifier board.   You are right though.... they ideally match up well with something without gain like the Django.   I'll have to consult with Lars to see what would be required and if this something that we want to encourage.
