Technics SL 220 HELP!!!!
« on: 29 Feb 2012, 01:21 am »
I have an opportunity to get one for $20.00. Needs a belt AND the arm does not come down ... is it possible it simply needs the arm floated and set properly or could there be a mechanical issue here? I know the belt can be tricky because SL 220's could use 2 different sizes depending on when it was built? Anyway I would like to set this up with an Ortofon Red cartdrige and partner it with my Luxman PX 100 table, both connected to a Sansui 771 and ADS' L780's!!! Help please? And, what do you think of my vintage "Frankie"? Thanks all! :thumb:

If the arm does not come down (with light pressure), there could be a couple of causes. First, the table may have been shut off, before the arm return finished its cycle. The cure for this is to turn the table on and see if it completes it, or start it out playing (no belt, platter wont spin), move the arm manually over where the record label (keep the stylus from damage) and see if the arm returns again on its own.

If that does not fix it, then there are linkages underneath that are out of wack. There is a return adjustment screw by the tonearm base, that adjusts when the tonearm lifts from the record at end of play. If this is set to early, that may also be another cause. That means linkage is still in cycle when the arm is in the return position.

Oh, rats, the drive gear for the arm linkage may be on the platter spindle assembly and without a belt, none of the linkage will move. So, that actually might be your problem. Get a belt and all problems should go away. Can't guarantee  it, but I'm pretty sure.

Today, I'm just not with it. We've had a major snowstorm up here and things are hectic. Pondering your problem further, I got my Technics SL-Q2 down from the shelf. It, too is a semi-automatic, but it is a direct drive.

Of course, (duh,  :duh:), you don't need a belt on the platter to check out the arm return. Simply turn the platter by hand. The table doesn't even need to be turned on. Hold the tonearm over the playing area of the mat and spin the platter. If it's in mid-cycle, the tonearm should want to go to the tonearm rest and drop. I suspect it is in mid-cycle and a few more revolutions of the platter should drop the cueing pad.

The cycle can be repeated, simply by spinning the platter and bringing the tonearm over to the label area. It should then lift up, swing over to the tonearm rest, and drop the cueing pad. This is exactly how my SL-Q2 works, and other then the 220 being a belt drive, yours should work the same way.

Thank you Wayner, I knew I could count on you! I do not own the table ... yet! I found it on CL's for $20.00. A $10.00 belt sounds like the cure. Sorry about your weather,  :( no fun!
If I buy the table, I will certainly let you know what happens, thanks for the advise!
