Budget DVD/SACD?

I am currently using a Sony Playstation 2 as my DVD source. The other day my wife brought home a Toshiba SD-K740 DVD player form Costco and I began wondering to myself what would I have to spend to buy something that plays SACD and DVD's with a modicum of respectability? I know, "What is your budget?" some are asking. I am thinking as affordable as possible. Can anybody offer suggestions? I am more concerned with sound than video abilities.

Pioneer, #563,  $150.

If you ever outgrow it, mod it.

another one may be the philips
DVD963SA  -  this is pretty much a universal player  MRSP 499 but can
probably be had for under 400 if you search around.

The Phillips is not Universal.  Wait til the end of next month and the new Denon's and Samsungs will be out.  As well as a smattering of others.

What do we mean by "universal" and how is the Phillips not universal  :?:

I took me a while to figure out what a pre/pro was...

I just picked up a Samsung 841 Universal player.  $143 out the door.  Open box at Best Buy with full warranty.  So far so good.  The kids are watching a slide show on it now.  Full review to come.
