Recommended Tube Amps from China?
« on: 27 Feb 2012, 08:14 am »
Folks,

I'm travelling to Shanghai for work, and wondering if any of you have any pointers to  tube amps that represent good value compared to prices we pay in the US?

A search in audio circle turns up a thread on a brand called Korsun from Korea, but wondering if there are any other brands or models you think I should check out while over there?

I have the song towers, and am currently using an Emotiva SS amp, so looking to upgrade the amp component here.

Thanks so much.

You may find equipment sold in the US (or wherever you are from) to be less expensive than the same one bought in China - amazingly.

It's because the Chinese government rebates back a sizable % to a manufacturer for exports...and doesn't subsidize it for sale within China.  If it's priced in RMB to a store in China it has no subsidy.

It also depends on the country you would buy it.  Tho there is a subsidy for exported products, the duty rate into the import may be so high as to negate that subsidy.

I don't want to use up too much of Salk's forum on this...suffice to say, do your homework on when the same or similar amp costs nearest to where you live before assuming it's cheaper in Shanghai. btw, Shanghai is a gorgeous, world-class city so simply enjoy your time there aside from work.

   John,
I've used both a Bob Latino ST 70 and ST120 with my SongTowers and have experienced excellent results with both. Very reasonably priced and well built. Not the last word in bling factor, but the sound makes up for it in spades. I would personally buy either of these American made amps before taking the plunge on a Chinese amp....unless you're in Shanghai for the long haul.

ps - afaik, korsun is chinese, and s/s, not sure if they have tubes.  i have a nice $250 korsun s/s integrated that sold for ~$300; red rose music sold the exact same amp w/different silkscreening on it for $2500.  a lot of red rose music's gear is way-overpriced korsun and aurum cantus gear.

Thanks guys. If it helps other in future I have a couple of leads for places to purchase items.

1.The Hi Fi market located at 398 Zhejiang lu near Nan Jing dong lu and 800 Quyang Road, Emart, located inside Quyang Furniture Plaza. #3 subway to Chifeng Lu.

2. Bao Shan Market, also referred to as Qiu Jiang Lu

Hopefully this will be a start, and I'll find others when I'm over there.
