Trying to decide on caps for tube amp
« on: 23 Feb 2012, 06:47 pm »
Has anyone heard the new silver in oil paper caps from Jensen?   I've been working down a list of caps for a snazzy new tube amp and I'm down to a few contenders.  Problem is, I've never heard most of these and have certainly never heard a silver based cap.

I'm looking for realism/tone (#1), detail (#2), and musicality (#3).  This is just a generalized ranking as I do want as much of the three as I can get from a cap.

My current list includes:

Claryity Cap MR
V-cap cuTF
Duelund VSF
Jensen silver-in-oil paper cap

I've been doing as much reading as I possibly can, but have found no reviews on the Jensen, as I suppose it is a newer design.  There are a couple of reviews on the cuTF.

I know the best thing would be to listen to each and then make a decision, but I don't have the $ to do that.  The Jensen and the Duelund are much more expensive than the others.  I'm willing to spend the extra money to get the best sound, I'm just looking for more opinions on which is likely to provide that or the sonic differences between them.

Any opinions on the sound of these in electronics/tube amps?

Thanks for looking.

If you're looking for tone above all, I would stay away from silver.

I've used AudioCap (Rel) PCUs (copper foil and gold plated leads) in a pair of Dodd Monoblocks and liked them a lot. They were a big improvement in tone and resolution from Sonicap IIs and Sonicap Platinums (Teflon).

I've also used Jupiter HTs in a DAC where it made a big improvement in the same areas as above.

The AudioCaps are expensive but significantly less so than the V-Caps or Duelands; which I haven't heard but am sure are superb based on both posted and verbal feedback. The Jupiters are less expensive than than the AudioCaps.

I know nothing about the Clarity Cap MRs.

Thanks for sharing your insights.  I had not heard about the AudioCaps except in general terms.  I'll see what I can find about them.

With regards to silver, what I had read suggested that they had super detail, but that copper is likely better for more correct tonality.
