RM2 STICKY MIDRANGE POT
« on: 21 Feb 2012, 10:42 pm »
The mid pot gets stuck between about 12 & 1 o'clock & the mid ribbons cut off. Outside this range the mids function. Anyone else experience this & what's the fix? Thanks. Also, how much are the CDWG's for the RM2's?

Sounds like you "burned" an L-Pad.  This can happen if your amp goes into clipping or Oscillation.

This creates heat at the coils of the L-Pad and they fry.  The cure is to replace the L-Pad with a new one.  Check with Brian on the parts cost, but it isn't excessive (compared to burning a driver which the L-Pad spares)

Also before firing it up again, make sure your amp is healthy and functioning properly.

A set of CDWG's for the RM2 (including tweeter) is $120.

Thanks for the info. Could this cause audible distortion?

I burned my L-Pads on my RM-2's last year by playing at excessive volumes (I was listening in another room!)  I got a pair of replacements from Brian.  They are pretty easy to install and that solved the problem. I also got CDWGs.  Brian said they "would be a nice upgrade" and he was right!  I recommend the CDWGs to anyone who does not have them.

Just ordered new pot & CDWG's. Hope to have them by end of next week. I'm not too handy but Brian will provide encouragement.

I think you will like the CDWG's.  I am bad at describing sound, but to me it pulled the midrange and bass together.  It got rid of the slight feeling that the woofer was somehow separated from the rest of the speaker.

Do the CDWG's on RM2's expand the sweet spot and or someting else?

I think someone else would be better answering that question.  I do about 80% of my listening off axis (way off, in another room)  The other 20% right in the middle of the speakers.  I believe they are suppose the widen the sweet spot.  I have not experimented much.  I did make the toe in less dramatic as was recommended by others.  The imaging at center is excellent, perhaps slightly better than before.
