Does it matter what a diffuser is made of? Both of my Maggie 1.7 stand in front of a concrete column that are approx 50" in circumference.

A diffuser needs to be made of material that reflects at the frequencies of interest. This is generally between 500 and 3500 Hz. Concrete surely fills the bill, though it must be the right shape.
