dont know.... I was under the impression that they were "disposable" and good for around 10k squeezes of the trigger.  I have the original Red U.K. one.  Mine doesn't Click and never has, but when you put the little plug thingie in the end and squeeze the trigger it lights up so I guess it's still operational...

To test to see if they work you can put the tip on your hand and pull the trigger. You should feel a zap. Or, if you are not into that, put the nozzle closet to a metal water pipe or faucet in a darkened room and pull the trigger, you should see a spark.

Had one of those Zerostats (Discwasher brand), the Discwasher shoeshine brush, and the discwasher stylus brush (still have that).

Thank you for your comments! I still have the spark but the click is gone,so i guess i am still functioning per se.
Drier climates really call for a device like this.I usually test the record by holding it up to my arm and seeing if the hairs raise up at all to see if the static has been neutralized. There is also the styro peanut test,if it sticks you have static, zap it and if it falls you are ready to spin.

to wayner.

The tip of the tongue works well, too

to all,

I have a circa 70's Discwasher Zerostat. Sometimes, it clicks, sometimes not. Still appears to work, though. Mine came with a little "tester' attachment which reveals the 'spark'.  And yes, I have lots more trouble with static in the wintertime in SE MN that at other times.

Happy listening,

glad to hear yours is still working.  if you squeeze fast enough it will probably click but clicking is an indicator of squeezing too fast.  slow is good.

a record just taken from the tt can be alive with static.  if you encounter one, do the process of squeeze and release (i usually release away from the record) and see if the static is gone.  if so, GREAT.

if yours seems not to work as my 1970s zstat did, peel the label from the base of the pistol, remove the philips screws, and look for where the setscrew is on the crystal.  it can be ever so slightly tightened and the zstat works again.

of COURSE they dont tell you, they would like you to buy another one.  not necessary if you follow my instructions on that.

i also have another that a friend gave me so i had nothing to lose.  but then if yours doesnt work, what is there to lose?

Heh, I have a red Zerostat 3 from the mid 80s.
I see the spark on my finger, I feel the tingle on my tongue and I hear nothing (bad) when I shoot my cartridge while it's playing.
