app for Rim Playbook?
« on: 14 Feb 2012, 03:44 am »
Is there a app for Rim's Playbook tablet to use on BDP-1 ? I know there is MPod and MPad for Apple iOS devices. The Playbook can now be purchased for only $199 now ( 16 GB version )

They've sold about a million RIM Playbook devices so far.  Apple sold 37 million iPhones in 2011 Q4 alone, and 11.5 million iPads in the same quarter.

Building software for the Playbook would cost ... I'll just guess at a very low $50K in development and ongoing support and maintenance costs.  The iPad is $499?

Let's suppose there are 100 would be owners of the BDP-1 who would also buy a RIM Playbook.  It would be less money to buy them all new iPads than it would cost to make a new app for the Playbook.

Not really my place to comment, but that's the uphill battle RIM is facing as they decided to invent a new platform rather than pick something like Android.  Theirs is a path fraught with peril.  And I'll be super impressed if they can pull off a second act.

You can check on MPD.wikia.com for clients or check out their forums.  If a device isn't actively being sold or has low sales don't expect folks to write apps for them.

You can still use the web interface (max and mini).

Oh, it's open source.  Boy, I'm really out of it these days.  In that case, who knows, some enterprising hacker might get it done.

Having said that, I see no one bothered for Blackberry OS even when it was popular, so what are the odds?

I thought I read something 1-2 months ago about RIM bringing out new software this Spring that would run Android applications -if proves true this may get you what you need....
