what to call my bass baffle
« on: 12 Feb 2012, 08:56 am »
I have been running alpha 15' on a 54mm thick tapered baffle for some time now and since I gave up on the 8" full range in OB and went with a 200Hz tractrix and Raal ribbons I have found the sound I am happy with. Whilst talking with my friend about finishes he suggested enclosing the sides of the baffle to make them look more domestically acceptable so yesterday I started to do that, completing one side of the first baffle. Today I will do the other side and listen to it compared with the open baffle. Its like a tapered box open at the back so what should I call it, its neither open baffle nor box. It may yet prove to be a non starter if it spoils that sound I have captured.

Open box?

Although.. I'm not sure what the sides are on... the horn and ribbon?

open box is what I thought, does this mean I am banished from the OB forum? Surely the H frame gang would have to leave too. The sides are on the bass section, the horn sits on top, the ribbon within the " box " but is not dipole so has no bearing on its sound.

I would call that an open box.  I think you can still hang out with us - it sure isn't a closed box!

Wouldn't a box without the back qualify as a "U" frame? Thought we had everything covered with our X frame alphabet.

The sides are on the bass section

As others suggested, that would probably be a U frame then. Have you tried putting damping in it? See JohnK's site for all the info on that... hang on ... here it is:

Yeah, I would say it's just a U-frame baffle at this point. Keep in mind, you may start to notice some kind of chamber resonance with this design over your original flat OB.

If you Google pic resize there are a number of free services out there.  I used one to create my avatar from an oversized pic.

PhotoBucket has a picture edit function, that's how I resize my pics.
That's a heck of a horn you have going on there! and a RAAL to boot....!
