How Too Isolation Feet

Moray if your speakers sit directly on carpet would you put something on the carpet like MDF, then the isolation feet between that and the speakers?  Any other materials better than MDF?  Or would spikes be better on carpet?

Hi John: depends? What is under the carpet? Spikes would be best on a concreat base. You can gain improvement if the base floor is wood with spikes but it will vary as the spikes get loose on the wood after time. The best remidy for this is three no. 10 flat head robertson (square socket) wood screws. You place one screw in exactly the spot where the spike goes and screw it down flush to the bottom of the carpet jute, a 1 1/2 inch screw will do as most floors are two layers of 3/4 inch OSB. Then each spike fits into the cup of each screw and you now have a soild metal to metal contact as good as it is with the spike on concreat. You can walk over the screw, vacuum and even wash the carpet and always put the stand (or speaker) back into the exact same place it was before.
If you don't want to use the screws then a concreat paving stone like the kind you can buy at Home Depot under the speaker on the carpet will give the foundation you require for spiking, a piece of MDF or plywood just is not heavy enough to get the job done. Hope this helps. Regards MOray James.

Let me ask you again Moray, can you take a few pictures of each step of building the isolation feet described at the beginning of this thread or at least one picture of the finished product. It would help a great deal.

I can't see any reason why three of these would not hold up several hundred pounds easy. Regards Moray James oh I will see if I can get my hands on a digital camera and taake some pictures.

Louis did have a drawing posted of the device. I do not own a digital camera but will try to borrow one and post a picture somewhere. In the mean time try to use your imagination, after all we are only talking three parts and only two are connected (a nut sticking through the hole of a washer) how tough can it be. Get the parts and hold them in you hands and look at them, the light has got to come on! If this is all too much like work then contact Noel Nolan at Skylan Stands and tell him I told you to ask him about his new magnetic ceramic mushroom feet. These feet are significantly better than the steel ones, don't fall over when you are trying to set them up and once installed do not fall off if you lift the equipment to adjust things. I hope this helps and I will do what I can about some pictures OK? Regards Moray James/

Yes I have and that's where I got the parts I am talking about. In my post I was very specific as to the type and size of parts to use. If you take that information to the "Depot" I am sure they will send you on your way with the right parts. That said I do agree about having a picture and will do what I can.  Try to remember that the nut press fits through the hole of the large washer and the small end of that nut sits in the whole of the smaller washer. This is not rocket science here! Regards Moray James.
