Vinyl, CD or is it something else...?!?
« on: 9 Feb 2012, 09:05 pm »
I have transposed allot of vintage music to the computer. It has came from LP's, cassettes and reel to reel tapes.

The transposed songs sound as good to me as they did on their original medium.

After doing so many AND listening to store-bought CD's of vintage music- it leaves me a little confused. Many times the store bought CD's do not sound as good as what I have put on computer myself. NOW: I could put the songs that are on the computer on a CD and doubt there would be any meaningful degradation.

That leads me to believe it's the commercial transposing process that is not always very good and the medium itself is not as important to the overall sound quality.

So- I have a feeling that when someone says an LP (or other analog medium) sounds better than a digital one- it has more to do with how the song was recorded on to that specific album- whatever it may be made out of.

The playback source has an effect also. My ripped CDs sound better from my computer than from my CD player even though they have the same DAC doing the D/A conversion. What did you use to transpose your LPs? I tried to use one of those Ion audio usb turntables. Sounded so bad that I stopped trying. I'm going to wait until I get a better turntable, before I try again. If I try again.

I have talked to Kevin Gray about this subject. A vinyl record can't be from the same master as a CD, or at least not in the same "burn condition". Vinyl simply can't handle the decibels as it's CD counterpart. They are, however, very close.

That said, it offers no explanation why an LP from a digital recording sounds better then the CD from a digital recording. I have witnessed this myself, and I have CDs that I have recorded from records that sound better then the commercial version of the same CD.

Go figure?

I use an Acoustic Research AR-XA turntable connected to a Fisher tube phono preamp. That is connected to a Behringer DAC. The software used is Audacity. The sound is excellent!

Filters are never used and it is important to record at the proper volume.

I love analog recordings for archival purposes. Vinyl lasts a long time and magnetic media does as well when taken care of. Digital media degrades poorly. I don't like the loud, sharp noises it's prone to make, pauses or long dead spots. In many cases, the medium can simply refuse to play at all.

The pro's of older recording technologies are often forgotten.
