Early Tom Petty - Better on vinyl?

I'm talking about Damn the Torpedos, Let me Up, Refugee, etc.  The music is fantastic but the CD sound quality is harsh.  Tell me it sounds better on original vinyl before I go out and buy them.

Gracious.

Well, I am not a rock fan. So I can't tell you about yr music.

Yet, I have old LPs of on-stage show recordings of Elvis Presley (1973), the Beach Boys (still remember "Fun, fun, fun"?), & the Eagles ("Hotel California"..). The live effect so reallistically reproduced via my humble home-brew stuffs that put my CDs & DVD-audio to shame.

Vinyl is the way to go for very serious music lovers.

Damn the Torpedoes sounds great on vinyl. Look for a clean original pressing with Sterling RL in the deadwax. Lots of them out there and usually reasonably priced.

More often then not, the vinyl will sound better then the cd, but not always. I have a few albums floating around here that the vinyl itself is so bad, the album is un-listenable. Later 70's, most of the 80's stuff, and a good portion of the 90's vinyl pressings suffered from just crappy vinyl. But there is good stuff to be had. Find one you like that looks to be in good shape, and take it home for a listen. If it meets your requirements, go get more.  :icon_lol:

Good Luck,

I have all of the early Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers on vinyl and I think it all sounds pretty good. I do not have CD versions so I can't compare. I bought the reissue of Damn the Torpedoes on 180g vinyl with the bonus tracks and it is terrific. I agree with blakep, try to find one with STERLING in the dead wax. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I also bought the 7 LP live anthology and it is some of the best sounding live recordings I have heard. TP personally picked each song over a 30 year tour history.

I have both, the vinyl is wayyyyyy better. The CD is bright and exceedingly harsh, no matter what system I play it in.
