Bryston B-60 questions
« on: 3 Feb 2012, 04:31 pm »
I've owned a B-60 SST for about a year now (my first Bryston) and just stumbled across this forum, so thought I'd post a couple of comments and questions.  I use the B-60 with highly efficient, horn-loaded speakers (104db efficiency Klipsch La Scalas).  Any problems with an amplifier are really thrown in your face.  The B-60 is the quietest, most musical amp I've ever heard.  There is no hiss or hum at idle, which for me is a big deal because I listen to a lot of classical music.  I just don't get the popularity of tube amps with horn speakers, with all the extra hum and hiss that tube amps seem to have (at least the two I tried, a Decware SET and an ASL integrated).  But I digress.  My questions are:
1.  There is a low to moderate "pop" through my speakers when powering down.  A techincian at Bryston USA assured me that this is OK, and to be expected from speakers so efficient.  I just wanted to reconfirm that speaker damage is unlikely over time. . . the pheonolic diaphragms in La Scala driver aren't very robust.
2.  Apparently B-60's have no DC protection circuitry.  Is that anything to worry about?  Thanks in advance for any answers.

Hi!

I got speakers with 98 dB efficiency. They also pop when shutting down the B60. Didn't do any harm over 8 years. When I remember correctly, this comes from the capacitors which are discharging. Since there are no relays in the signal path this is normal.
If the excursion of the diaphragms is not too much (the question is, what is "too much"...), I wouldn't worry.

I get a very, very feint thump powering on and off.  Hasn't caused a single issue.

I had a B-60 some time ago and it did had the "thump" noise when I turned it on and off it was small, but it was there!!! I think it is from the power supply capacitors discharging since the B60 does not have a relay to "mask" the thump noise. But maybe I am wrong here. We need the knowledge from the boss here.

PS: small thump will not damage speakers...unless it is high DC voltage going to your speakers. just get a multimeter and measure voltage at turn on/off, also check dc offset, it should be around 0.5Mv approximately.
