In the past you would have gotten a sexy energizer bunny on crack. These days you get to see Auntie M gasping for breath. No thanks.

I happened to see American Life show. My wife (at the time) was a hugh fan and my father in law bought us tickets. Know what, it was a great show and lot of fun. I wasn't sure what to expect but Madonna is a terrific entertainer.

I think some of you might have her confused with Britney Spears. Madonna doesn't lip sync, looks great and knows how to wow the audience. It's no coincidence that Lady Gaga copies her. If you don't like her music, why do you care and why are some of you so nasty? It's not really my cup of tea but seeing a live show can be a very different experience than listening to a recording.

Fullrange,
Madonna has always been outrageous and made sarcastic or tongue in cheek statements. Do you think she was seriously asking people to save up all yr to see her show? LOL with an IQ of 140 she got you to promote her show or tour, whatever. Publicity is publicity, it doesn't matter if it's negative or positive.

as far as $300 to see Madonna  i think your hanging out with Theodore to much

Somebody please tell me that Dennis Rodman wasn't really ever her boyfriend, that it was just a publicity stunt.

Madonna talk proved how sarcastic and arrogant and that is what counts. The true persona of Madonna nobody cares.
I am surprised to see a man as fan, but it is not unsual, as would say Tom Jones.

Bottom line is that if you think it's not worth it, you won't be contributing to the "fund".  If you want to go to a certain show, you'll need to find out the cost and make up your own mind.  Madonna may not be some people's cup of tea, but I heard she puts on one of the best shows around, even now, decades after the "Like a Virgin" days....

Like many of you, I never cared much for Madonna, until I bought the Dick Tracy sound track on vinyl for a couple of bucks at a sale. The woman can sing and someday as, she matures , she'll record more music to my liking. Talented people tend to be scewballs. She's no exception. I have a feeling she's going to put on a hell of a show at the Super Bowl.

To me, Madonna is a classic example of an entertainer as opposed to an artist. If you go to see Madonna perform, you will no doubt be entertained. There have always been people who put their priority on being entertainers and there always will. And there always has been and always will be people who will lay their money down to be entertained. Fine and dandy. That being said, from an artistic standpoint, Madonna is and always has been pretty weak tea. She has to my mind always been a reflection of trends going on around her as opposed to being an actual trend-setter. The key for her success was to stay far enough ahead of the curve to latch on to trends before the mainsteam did and in doing so, appear to be at the cutting edge. Artists who actually were at the cutting edge have always seen her for what she was / is -a business. And a poseur. Let's Vogue !

In a previous post, I had alluded having to a grudging respect for what Madonna had accomplished over the course of her career. I've given that a bit more thought and would now retract that statement. Just as she never really broke any ground as an artist, Madonna never really broke any ground in terms of how she managed to achieve and maintain a position in the public eye, preferring to take the tried and true route of exploiting her sexuality and creating and then exploiting ginned-up controversy ( cone bras/ teen pregnancy song / Sexy-time book / quasi-religious imagery designed to offend and generate press / yadda yadda yadda ). The actual music? Pretty much empty pop calories - at least the old stuff was catchy. Does anyone want to hear that horrific misstep that was her American Pie cover? Yikes... Throw her stillborn, ego-driven careers as an actress and more recently as a director onto the pop culture bonfire too while you're at it. As to Madonna the children's book author, well why even go there?

Is she talented? Sure she is - at making money, at playing the public's basest instincts for profit, at stretching her 15 Warholian minutes far beyond what her skillset might actually warrant. She's an OK dancer, OK singer, entry-level guitarist, and has an ear for a pop hook although this seems to have deserted her of late or maybe she just hasn't been able to latch on to any good songwriting help recently...

Is she an artist ? Meh...she's an entertainer. Like a dancing bear or a performing monkey.

People pay to see those, too.

Not a big fan of Madge. In general her brunette stuff far surpasses her blonde stuff.

Outside of her work with William Orbit, the only thing I've really liked is the original version of her Rose Royce cover.

DiamondDog you have nailed it about Madonna.  I for one will be watching for the football.  My audio system, with MY music, will be playing at half time.  Go G-men!

The lady is musical theater.  Not a great actress, not a great musician, but a talented combination. If you haven't seen her version of "Evita", pick it up and see what you think.  She is excellent in the role.  Having said that, I have no interest in seeing her strictly as a singing talent.

I heard on the  Mike Evans Hollywood show this week, that Elton John told Madonna to make sure she lip sync's good this weekend at the superbowl.

When I was stationed in Spain back in the mid-80's I dated a chick that loved "Like a Virgin". She played it constantly. A couple of years after that tour I was going through some boxes and found a stash of CD's with that disc in it. I played it mostly for kicks, but found myself playing one song a couple of times over. It's one she wrote by herself called "Shoo-Bee-Doo". It's a great song and an amazing vocal performance. I think it's one of the best female performances of that era and quite honestly, the entire album is pretty good (this coming from a guy who loves the obscure). The musicians on that album were top-shelf:

Bernard Edwards – bass
Nile Rodgers – guitar, synclavier
Lenny Pickett – saxophone
Robert Sabino – synthesizer
Dave Weckl – drums
Tony Thompson – drums

Everything she did after that pretty much sucked and did nothing for me, but Like a Virgin is good shit. As good as (or better than) most of the popular radio spinners from that era. Massive Attack worked with her on a cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" - and it's a fantastic downtempo/trip-hop song. One of the best I've ever heard.

I think she's a talented vocalist who made one great album and then became a trash-selling fluff machine. Bash her all you want, but don't be hatin' Live a Virgin!  8)

Shoo Bee Doo - Like a Virgin
I Want You - Massive Attack

And no, I wouldn't go see her now if I won free tickets from a local radio station. Just sayin'

It would have been funnier if it wasn't so dangerously close to my heartfelt plea for everyone to give a little respect to Madonna's "Live a Virgin" album

Yankovic took the words of my mouth. I unaware she do lips sync, maybe her voice is no more at such age.
