With 1TB drives not much bigger than a ipod touch, I don't think storage is an issue.  Can they build an output stage on a mobile device that will do justice to HiRez output?

The ipad today will output 24/192 or more (I've done 24/192 via FLAC player) via USB (and a camera kit).  Of course this is just a transport...no ouput per se except USB.

Have you tried this with an iPad 2? Works great on the iPad, but I've read rumors of it having been disabled on the iPad 2.

No I haven't.  I've read rumors of the same.
