The next Houston Audio Society meeting is on Saturday, February 18th, starting at 1:30 PM at my house. The meeting topic is Uriah Dailey's Lighter Note LDR (light dependent resistor) attenuator. We will do an a/b comparison to a Parasound P3 active preamp and to a Placette passive attenuator, which uses a ladder of precision resistors. Equipment used in this comparison will include a Cambridge Audio Azur 850C source, the three preamplifiers, a D-Sonic Magnum 1000 amplifier, and the Selah Audio XT-8 line array speakers.
A secondary topic will be the $350 (total price of everything) system I've set up in another room. This system is intended for anybody with a very limited budget who wants better sound than computer speakers or the typical iPod dock. The system includes a mass market DVD player, an iPod adapter cable, a mass market two channel receiver, the Parts Express BR-1 kit speakers, and Radio Shack 14ga Megacable speaker cables. Audiosnobs will be asked to leave their attitude outside the door for this audition.
