An 8 year old DIY project, perhaps completed......
« on: 30 Jan 2012, 10:14 pm »
Well, the AR-4x project got me going on this project that I started back in 2004. It's been rebuilt so many times, I've lost count. I've learned many things along the way, one of them is a new fondness for the efforts that guys like Jim Salk/Dennis Murphy or Fritz (Fritz Audio) must go thru to design a speaker system.

8 years later and I'm finally getting there.

The speaker is a very small cabinet with an internal volume of about .41 cubic feet. The woofer is a 6.5", 8 ohm driver, the tweeter is a 1" soft dome fabric type, also at 8 ohms.

The cross-over is at 2750 for both drivers, with the tweeter featuring a 3db gain reduction loss pad (L-pad) and the woofer features an impedance equalizer circuit.

My cross-over pad has had so many components glued and removed, it looks like a battle field, but I still plowed forward, obviously at a very slow pace. I did give up on it several times. I think the success of the project came when a "couple of lights came on" and I figured out a few issues.

Anyway, for their size, they sound pretty good.

My hat goes off to you gentlemen that make speakers for a living!

Pretty cool indeed!

Recipe? Components?  Applications?

I'm not springing for any new components for a while, but room treatment and speakers are what I'm looking at now.  I'm in a "near field" situation, where I'm often sitting at my desk listening and trying to transcribe, or kicked back a few feet sitting in my office chair (with the arms - of the chair of course - removed) playing along.

These guys look like they'd be perfect for that!

Gain reduction loss? :icon_lol:
Now that has to be the just about the most creative word arrangement for "attenuation" that I've ever encountered.
And another fancy word, that you can use in place of "impedance equalizer circuit" would be "Zobel."

Pardon my french Alan, I guess I meant 3 db loss. Obviously, I'm not up to your engineering caliber, so why not take a flying leap. BTW, they sound pretty good, even if my terminology is wrong.

It's funny that I'm only 3 or so posts in and I already regret it.

Sorry if I've added to bummer quotient...  Looks like a nifty little rig, and I thought I'd read that at least one of your listening areas was a near field situation.

Your terminology wasn't wrong, just convoluted and redundant.

Hey, I'll take a flying leap just as soon as I drink a can of Red Bull. Because Red Bull gives you wings! Weeeee.
