Great Sounding Billy Joel CD's ?
« on: 28 Jan 2012, 03:55 pm »
Most of his CD's seem flat to me. Anybody have recommendations for a quality sounding CD from him  ? Thanks in advance...

The original Japanese pressings of The Stranger and Piano Man are excellent. They are hard to spot but IMO much better than the later remasters.  :D

Following with interest...

I've noticed the same; it's frustrating given how amazing all of his original vinyl sounds.  I  haven't found any good CDs yet, but I can tell you not to bother with the mofi SACD of Turnstiles.

Let's add quality vinyl options as well... I guess Billy never pushed for quality recordings...... Even the blu-ray concert release isn't much to get excited over...
Thanks

The Stranger on SACD is a little thin sounding, but it's significantly better than my original CBS CD.

Is your original a Japanese pressing?

Yes. At the bottom of the disc it says "CBS", () are trademarks of CBS Inc. Made in Japan"

I have a soft spot in my heart for Billy Joel. His was the first recording I ever owned, on any format. "Glass Houses" on vinyl, in fact. As time went on and my tastes changed, I grew away from his music. I've not heard one of his songs in many years as a result. After I got into "audiophildom", I tried a couple times to relive some of those old memories, but couldn't make it to the end of the song due to the horrible sound quality.
So to make a short story longer, I'm following with interest as well.

I had high hopes a few years ago when he orchestrated that instrumental piano album, but before I bought it, I discovered it wasn't even him playing, it was some other guy. What the hell is the deal with that?
Also, I noticed he's released another "Greatest Hits".  :| Not sure how many he's up to, but it's become shameful.

I love the man and his music, but damn....

On the vinyl front, I've just picked up $2 and $4 copies of the original releases at local record store and been pleasantly surprised at how uniformly excellent the sound has been, with tight bass, great dynamics and presence.  52nd Street and Innocent Man stand out particularly, but Nylon Curtain and even Glass Houses are also nice to my ears.
