Did anyone make to the Gradient Room?
They got a lot of press and favorable remarks in NY, I'm wondering what the west coasters thought.

Hmmm, the Magnepan thing. FYI, i tried three times too, getting in on the last try after waiting and waiting. The first day i tried, Wendell of Magnepan saw me and we very briefly spoke. Keep in mind Wendell has been to my home to help deliver the 3.6 i reviewed MANY years ago. So even lowly guys like me waited a few times. Alas, did not hear the demo as seats were full and was already 'disturbing' the demo per se by getting a fast pic and info. (with all due apologies to those whom i may have disturbed during the demo)

So no, it was not just you guys, even a lowly dude like me had to try a few times. BTW, i loved the 3.6 in my review and they really do make some amazing speakers. Sometimes at a show a constantly packed demo room can be a bit frustraiting. It happens at various shows and have seen it many times over the years.

I got to the Magnepan room early-ish on Friday afternoon. I think it was, maybe, their third time running through it. I thought it was a great demo.

BTW, apologies for the slow release of the write-ups. Lost all my show notes on Sunday afternoon when someone "traded bags" with me, so I've had to recreate everything from memory -- with some help from the folks running the demos.

I know I listened in there but only for a brief time and I wasn't crazy about what I heard, but frankly I can't remember what it was that I didn't like.

Roger Sanders wouldn't treat you like that. . .
They were very nice in the Sanders suite although Roger wasn't there (at least when I went on Sunday). My next speaker purchase will be the Sanders, they are that good.

Magnepan obviously doesn't want my business anymore. Wendell should really be locked up in Operations as marketing does not suit his personality.

Magnepan is just as tough on high end dealers at the CES shows. I was a dealer for 15 years starting back in 1980. Magnepan was always were hid at a hotel away from the main show. Good luck on ever finding them. They only showed to authorized Magnepan dealers, so any other dealer was flat out of luck.

And becoming a Magnepan dealer seemed next to impossible. First you had to be in a large metro area, then they would come to your store and grade you. If they did not like what they saw, no deal.

I visited the SimpliFi room at the Atrium several times.  It's a testament to Tim Ryan how he seemingly produces very good sound at these shows without room treatment.  I thought the Gradients had the best bass at the NY Waldorf show, but at Newport Beach he outdid himself.  There were equipment and boxes laid out everywhere in the room to resemble a warehouse, yet the sound was excellent.  At the heart of the demo is a new preamp/equalizer/room correction unit from DSPeaker that takes care of any room problems.  I couldn't believe what I was hearing and went back several times just to make sure my ears weren't playing tricks on me.  The last time I was in the room Tim was telling John Atkinson about the capabilities of the unit while John was busy writing everything down.  JA must have been in the room for at least 30 minutes, so I left.  The first time I was in the room I asked Tim if I could borrow a unit for review, but he said Kal Robinson and several other reviewers already wanted to do the same.  Since he only has about 10 units right now I would have to wait in turn.  The best thing is the DSPeaker Anti-mode retails for $1,200 and I think worth every penny.

Paul,
Thanks for the write up. Tim has been putting together a system around the Dual Core for some time now. He worked with Dspeaker in Finland on the project and it seems like he has hit a home run with it.
I will have a Dual Core in my system sometime next week. I ordered one from Tim on a prerelease buy. He would have sent it to me sooner but there were a few software revisions and glitches that needed to get worked first. I will start a thread when I have it set up.

I guess I dont get the Magnepan exhibit.  How many people are going to set-up a SS system for their 2-channel?

Need 3 speakers and 3 amps, not 2 and a SS preamp.  What do you do for music??  Is it a phantom center-channel?

Seems like an easy way to get decent imaging at a show, instead of working hard on a 2-channel system acoustics, setup and EQ to get the same thing...

Chris - I'll be looking for the thread.  I think if the unit does anything close to what I heard at the Newport Beach show, it will be money well spent.   Paul

I've seen several pictures of the ESS Heil room, but I can't tell what the woofer configuration is on the large, full OB speakers in their room.  Can someone who saw it please explain?  Thanks.

As far as I remember there is a box under the panel with "subs", but you might be referring to the bass drivers that are in a vertical colum, that are all moved by the same rods... I made a video.... If I could find it...

This is probably a little late, but you never know.........

When I went into the McIntosh suite in the Atrium, they were playing Mancini's "Theme From the Pink Panther" (yes, it sounded very good  :green:)

I glanced at the music server screen and noticed that it was shown as a high rez file, but the "source" portion was too short, and all I could see was "Ultimate". I have found a high rez Mancini collection on an SACD hybrid, but it's getting some mixed comments that a whole bunch of the cuts are not just instrumentals, but have some vocals mixed in on some of the cuts and the comments are that the versions on the disc aren't necessarily very good. I liked the version I heard at the show.

Does anybody know if this was the version at the show, or is there another source?

Yep, really late, but there's an embarrassing number of new posts on the Newport Show -- and still more coming. Wow, that was a big show. I really need to figure out a way to cover more, faster.

Anyway, check 'em out at your leisure and convenience. Thanks for watching!
