Ubuntu's Interface Gamble

Gee, really? Seems like a gussied-up text-prompt interface to me. I haven't been missing the command line that much and doubt I would like to go back even if the machine IS pretty good at guessing what I am trying to do. But I work at an apple store and believe me, many cannot even describe what they are trying to do to a human being, let alone to a machine. I realize that the average Linux user is probably way more savvy than Mr and Mrs I-just-want-my-computer-to-work, but if they want to bring in more of the mainstream users, is an interface that will be completely alien to them really a good idea? I mean, a dropdown menu only uses a lot of space when it is open, and saving screen space was more critical in the age of 9" screens anyway. Just curious what the geek contingent here thinks.

Wow and I was annoyed with the application finder/start menu crap..  It offers applications not installed that is either free or from the store and then offers your applications..  Very worthless interface if you ask me.   Now they go do this "HUD", hopefully this new stuff is optional.

Another memo I didn't get. When did these things stop being artificial idiots?
Hopefully it will remain optional or defeatable.

For now, apparently.

I am a Mac user primarily and have just been experimenting with Ubuntu in a VM, for fun basically.

The reason menus have endured is that they were a good idea. This reminds me of Ford putting the horn on the turn signal lever years ago- different just to be different is not enough.

Might have to find another distribution to play with if this keeps up.
