What are some of your thoughts and/or experiences for head shells of different materials, eg; hardwoods, titanium, carbon, magnesium, etc?

Hey!

Not to hi jack this post or anything... hope it is OK. But I was wondering about the wooden head shell especially the Yamamoto HS-1A....

Currently I'm using vintage SME 3009 II Improved tonearm. I wonder how this will work with it, I do worry about the height a bit.

If anyone have experience with the this Yamamoto head shell and where to get the best price please let me know. :D

Take care,

I have one of those too but I have yet to mount it. I'm more curious about the sound characteristics.

Well I just finished my new setup an I can say it sounds quite nice, not too terribly noticeable, it's still very transparent. The bass is nice and tight and it sounds right to me. I would mark this one down as jewelry... but then again I wasn't using the normal SME headshell to begin with, I was using a magnesium Micro Seiki headshell. While I have the original SME HS, it sounded way too bright and picked up too much stray vibrations.

Hey!

     Thanks for the update. :D

OK, Micro Seiki headshell is better than the SME headshell but the Yamamoto is a bit better than the Micro Seiki.

So, I guess it would be a good improvement over the stock SME than for me.

One more thing. Did you have to readjust the arm hight for the Yamamoto? It is sure looks higher than SME or other headshell.

Well I changed cartridges too, I didn't notice any difference in sound compared to the MS but it does look a lot nicer.
