Basic room treatment impressions.
« on: 23 Jan 2012, 01:36 pm »
Hi y'all. I just brought home a set of Tri-traps and 2 GIK 242 panels to try out in my small (13' X 14') room. Before I was getting a harshness in the high mids from a slapback echo, and my low mids and high/mid bass lacked definition. I set up the 242s temporarily against the back wall behind my listening position (which is 2' from back wall), and I set the Tri-traps in the front corners.

Result? I'm very pleased. Harshness and ringing has been tamed, reducing fatigue and allowing me to turn it up more for better overall impact (I like impact  :icon_twisted:), and the mids and mid bass has been greatly cleaned up, in addition to less loading of my small room, also allowing me to turn up the gain on the twin subs integrated in my SAM1 monitors.

In short, a little bit of treatment in a smaller room seems to go a long way!

(BTW, I bought these from Gopher (Fred), who is a very cool guy. I know he's got a bunch of stuff for sale right now, and I can tell you that he's very fair and nice to deal with.)

As long as it's in moderation and thick enough to address what you're trying to accomplish at a given place in the room.   :green:

Room treatments help ALOT and can make all the difference in the world. If you lower the blinds over the windows that should help too. A fully treated room can make most any speakers sound good.

When I moved to this house I built a custom fully treated room my speakers sounded totally different. It was an amazing improvement. Treatments are second only to speakers or the equal to speakers in importance.

Thanks guys.

I don't know if I would do much more in the way of treatments, considering how good things sound as it is. I want to keep a bit of the liveliness that the room has. But I could see how a bit more diffusion might be fun. My girlfriend might hate me a little though .

The monkey painting was done by my friend Chris Bennett, a young artist here in the Hamptons. I saw it as his show and bought it on the spot. It reminds me of what we are and what we are not. There's also a dreamy quality; the paint splatters make it look like the universe can be seen in the monkey's head.

Been lucky to be working from home these days... I get to spend a lot of time in that room!  :D
