It's all in context I guess, I actually really like beans on toast :)

Seriously though for £17,000 you can buy the top 'master' part of the IB2S XBD-A and that would far out perform the Meridian DSP7200's and you could even add the XBD bottom cabinet at a later date if required.

I was kidding too.  My real question would be, what type of customers would choose the Meridian and what is it that they would prefer?  Is it the styling - which I can see - they have a little more WAF, though I like the solid look of the PMC's.  It's all about the customer and I'm sure you've got Meridian customer, otherwise you wouldn't be dealing with their products.  So what does the Meridian client prefer in the Meridian over the PMC?  Are their any weaknesses in the PMC vs the Meridian?

I've only been working in the trade for the last 10 months or so and all of the Meridian customers we have had in are all ready into the brand, some for 20 years + and are extremely loyal and probably not willing to look at alternatives, the thing with Meridian is that you really have to buy 100% into the brand, it is very difficult to mix different brands into a system so I'd say most Meridian customers that I say upgrade from within the brand, I haven't actually seen any new Meridian customers come in yet, not sure that is very good for Meridian long term to be honest.

I guess I'm similar though, I can't understand why anyone else buys anything other than PMC and Bryston

I try to keep an open mind, so I enjoy visiting shows to hear alternative sounds.  I am going to Audio World this Sunday - a high end show here in the UK.
But, the more I hear the closer I get to Bryston/PMC.  And because of this, one builds up a trust for the companies, and loyalty is the obvious benefactor.

It is intersting in what makes us choose the brands that we get behind and enjoy, after saying yesterday that I never get any new Meridian customers in, I had one today, he was thinking about swapping over from Naim/PMC to Meridian, basically to reduce his box count, straight away though I could tell he wasn't enjoying what he was hearing and he decided to stay with Naim and bought a HiCap, adding to his box count, so that didn't work out how he was planning.

Let us know if you see see anything interesting at Audio World Kyri.

Hey Vipers,

Well, a pretty disappointing show by all accounts.  Not so much the lack of exhibitors, but the lack of respect.  There was so much talking within the rooms, even the reps were doing it.  I find that so infuriating.
The music choice is always so typical of high end shows - some orchestral tune or a classical piece. I had a chat with the Focal guys, who were friendly enough to crank out some Rage Against The Machine.  But the only memorable room for me, was the 2nd Focal room.  The Scala Utopias were great - I find a similarity to PMC speakers in their sound.  In that they, too, are very detailed & revealing.
The hotel was very nice!  That brings my report to a close.

I prefer ATC to PMC in build quality and sound quality. I hope Bryston does a showing with ATC sometime in the future.  :D

Well I am the reverse, I had atc's 100's, although they sounded ok and have a look of the retro old age, they are not in Pmc's league by all accounts IMO but each to there own.

Thanks for the report Kyri, sorry to hear the show wasn't the best, I find the above statement very disapointing, you really would think that people attending these shows, especailly the reps, would know better, there is nothing more annoying, it's like when I went to see Prince at the O2 a couple of years ago, the whole crowd chatted through the gig, in the end my wife got so annoyed she threw a pint of beer over the people sitting infront of us, it shut them up but we got escorted from the gig, so it didn't really help

Vipers,

Crikey!!  If I'm to be escorted from a gig that's the reason I want.

Audio World - dare I say it, but there is a better class of person at the Bristol Show.  Which is not what one would expect.
I found it strange that Focal didn't share a room with Naim, now that they are a joint company.  And it is quite incredible how much some of the equipment costs.  The Burmester room was nice, but I was likely listening to over £80,000 worth of equipment.  And it wasn't THAT nice.

Fair enough. PMC is a good speaker, but not a great one, imo.

Just out of curiousity vegasdave, have you heard the PMC range from the IB2i's upwards, ie, the good stuff :)

ATC are very good speakers, in fact for quite some time I had ATC SCM50 ASL side by side with PMC passive IB2s, IB2i and the new active PMC IB2 XBDS-A (the top master without sub). The build quality is not subjective so I can safely comment on that, ATC is built with more precision, there are omissions on PMC that are simply not justifiable at such price point.

I have looked at ATC before but never had a chance to listen to them.  I have noticed that their specs seem to indicate that right up their line their speakers do not dig low into the frequency range, with average reach to around 60 Hz at +/- 2dB.  I would think the PMC models would more easily cover a broader frequency spectrum without the use of a sub.

Nothing above the EB1s to be honest.

Definitely have a listen to the 'pro' pmc's! they are a completely different kettle of fish to the consumer range, with which i agree with your initial comment on, good but not great.
Ive been running aml1's for a couple of years now, and they still amaze and delight every time i turn them on :D
