Been reading Wayners thread about his Ar 4x speakers. Always looking on Craigslist for speakers and these came up. Not really anything on the web about them. The guy who i bought them off of says he bought them in the 70th when he was in  college. He was really anal had the original boxes and all the paper work. He even kept the ups slips when they tried to deliver them. They were made by Stereo corp of America 2122 Utica Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11234. I'm sure some of our NY'ers will have some insight on them. in any case they are the top of the line from lab standards and cost $119.95 new.

specs are 3 way 3 speaker closed Cabernet
50 watts continuous
12 " high compliance long throw woofer
6" closed back mid-range
3.5 closed back tweeter
 crossover  frequency 3k 8k
oiled walnut cabinets

I have no idea what shape the crossovers are in and i am going to give them a couple of days to loosen  back up before i give them a good listen. although my honey says they are sounding good and she likes the looks of them  :duh: she fought me tooth and nail about setting my stereo up in the living room when we moved in together they don t sound to bad but i need to find a place to set them up and give them a good listen.

Because I'm a New Yorker, I have to respond...
I don't remember this brand but the ad sure looks cool. Growing up in Westbury, Long Island, I can remember riding my bike to check the dumpsters at Harman Kardon, Garrard, among others. We had what I would imagine was THE Lafayette store and I used to read those catalogs cover to cover. Oh yeah, we had Heathkit. My best friend Danny built a Zero 100 with parts.

Those were the days. My memoir:
Portrait of an Audiophile as a Young Snob.

here's the cover of the brochure. Big claims from a speaker company that seems to have no history Truth in Sound

no ones ever heard of these  :duh:

I surely have! I remember ads in Stereo Review for these. I also remember the company name. Look very nice, Ed. You did a nice score there.

Probably the caps have changed value, as my ARs did. First suggestion is to listen to them at lower levels and see if you can hear any cone break-up on the mid-range and tweeter. Another sign might be listener fatigue after a prolonged session. Other then that, you may have to go in there. One problem is that you need a capacitance meter and you have to remove one lead of the capacitor to get an accurate reading.......

Ed don't go down that road you'll end up with 30 pairs of vintage speakers  :nono:

As a young lad, I had subscriptions to Stereo Review and High Fidelity magazines. These mags had reader service cards in the back pages. I almost always circled damn near everyone for years. I had so much material sent to me, I'm sure they were sick and tired of it all.

I sure wish I had kept them, tho I still have some stuff from JBL, but that was a letter in response to a letter I sent them regarding power handling of my L100s.

I actually only have 3 pairs, 5 pairs of "vintage" speakers. The ARs, 2 pairs of Dynaco A25XLs, the Advent Model 3s and the Knights.

I would believe that those are 'House Brand' speakers made for Stereo Warehouse, which was located at that address you gave in Brooklyn, and a division of Stereo Corporation of America. Who the OEM maker was, no idea.
