An interview with Danny Richie

This is an audio interview that was conducted over the phone last year. I think it was late spring of 2011.

http://squarecad.net/ArchivePages/squarecad19_speakerdesign.html

I knew from an e-mail that he was wanting to conduct an interview with me but the call early in the morning was still a bit of a surprise. So everything was spontaneous and unrehearsed. I had no idea what his questions might be or where it would go.

The interview is mostly unedited and lasted nearly 30 minutes.

My Texas drawl came out quite a bit giving me that real hillbilly sound.   But that just the norm around these parts.  :green:

Some good questions were asked though and I guess he caught me in a talkative mood.

Take it for whats it worth.

Thanks but you can keep your snow. Today the sun is shinning and we might hit 65 today.

Nice interview Danny!

You say that the interview was last Spring and you mentioned a "cost-no-object" speaker that you hoped to have ready for RMAF (2011). Did they ever come into being, are they still on the drawing board, or did it die?

That design was mine, and I was practically giving it away to another company to make it happen. But now that is not happening. That company is now struggling because of the economy. Also sales of brick and mortar stores have been grinding to a halt. And am not even sure we will continue to see high end audio sold the same way any more. So I am still going to make that speaker happen but it will be a direct sale item sold in a new and less traditional manor. The price will also be much lower with no middle man (no store).

I was afraid that it was something like that. Ah well, assume it was a labor of love.
Of course, now I'm curious. What would be MY approach to a cost-no-object speaker design.
Active with top of the line drivers. amplification, and EQ??? (but I'm not a fan of Meridian)
Huge muti speaker/enclosure speakers ala the old Infiniti IRS? (been done)
A larger no baffle design with custom drivers (hmmm... intriguing)
....or something completely different?????? :fishing:

Excellent interview Danny. When I get a chance and it's a little quieter in the house, I'm gonna give it another listen or two. Lots of great information in there!

Excellent interview Danny.  If you think that sounded hillbilly you need to spend time with some of my relatives in Louisiana.   :D  You learned me some things there.  Seriously, I enjoyed it very much.

I can't hear the file its volume is incredibly low. Anyone know of a way to make it louder?  I tried downloading it but that was the same as playing it from the wedsite.

That was great, and super educational. I wish there was more material like that to listen to.
