Lp Storage

Hi everyone i recently moved into a apartment and my Boss aka wife wants me to replace my old wood storage crates for my records. i was thinking of building a custom bookcase style shelf but i came across this on the internet http://www.lpbin.com .I like this idea because my cat would not to be able to scratch the records(she just started doing this after the move) and i could find my favorite record faster thanks and keep the vinyl spinning

Possibly worth looking at the Ikea Expedit.
Perfect for record storage, great value and very much passed the wife test here.
In fact it was she who 1st spotted and recommended we got them.
You do need to add a baton to each (backless) shelf to maintain the vinyl at a common fixed depth.

Expedit is great unless you want your vinyl to be front facing. I would prefer to look at the pretty covers...

yes, I agree. Front facing would be nice. I'm still using wooden crates I built and the spline look is getting old. It really does make hunting a little more difficult.

I like those front facing bins. Very easy to build also.

Nice, I've been looking for something like that. Are records too heavy for the upper shelves, is that why you only store them on the bottom? It says solid hardwood, is this correct?

Not too expensive. $80 plus tax. It works great for my small collection of vinyl and definitely gives me room to grow. I have about 120 titles on vinyl (probably 140+ physical records due to double, triple, or quad LP albums) and I'm just now making it to the third cube. I could pack my records tighter, but choose to allow a little room. I estimate you could probably get 360 to 380 titles into this shelf. They also make a vertical version of it. I wanted an Ikea Expedit, but the closest Ikea to me is over 6 hours away. Target is two miles from my house.

I have a custom version of lpbin made by Thomas at http://loft3f.com/ in VA. It's amazing and wasn't that much more than an lpbin. Made of steel and real wood, it's one of my fav pieces of audiophilia.

If anyone's interested, I can upload some pix of it. I'm sure Thomas would build you one, too.

nefertem, your scratching problems may be helped by placing cat scratching posts around the house,carpeted cat-poles or other carpeted cat furniture that the cat can scratch on. So far I have not this problem with any of the cats I have shared my home with.
I have two large cat poles in my living room they keep the cat happy and provide a little acoustic diffusion/absorption. They are outboard of each loudspeaker and help deal with diffraction issues.

i also trim my cats toenails as needed and this also helps with their need to scratch on something.

I'll try to post pics this evening, but I can attest to the depth of the cubes being more than enough for LPs. In fact, I recently purchased some wood dowels from Home Depot and wedged/glued them into place at the rear of the cubes so that my LPs would be closer to the edge for easier removal.

I've got vinyl on the bottom two levels. You could probably go three unless you have little kids. There is a point where it would get a bit top heavy. And yes, it is some sort of eastern hardwood.

I use the single cube version of it just stacked up. You don't have to worry about sagging at all.

Here are the pics of my Target 6 cube LP rack. I took them with my iPhone so they're not that great, but you get the gist. In the second photo you can see my wood stop towards the back. It keeps the 12" LP's around 3/8" from the front edge. The actual dimensions of each cube is roughly 13.5" x 13.5" and 14.5" deep.

Hi thanks everyone for there input and responces . and to scotty i do have scraching toys for my cat, she is just pissed off she cant go outside. as she did at my old house.

You have problem for sure, your cat is now in a SuperMax prison. Somehow you have to make the new place less like confinement. The energy she used to burn-off outside is now just building up and doesn't have a good outlet. You may have take more time to play with her and satisfy her hunting instincts. Tall cat poles and cat furniture also add a third dimension of space to her environment so that she doesn't feel trapped on the just the floor. Good luck with the transition process.
