Which RAM tubes in RM10?
« on: 15 Jan 2012, 07:39 pm »
I am going to replace all the tubes in my RM10.  The RAM Labs online store lists 3 different EL84s: a NOS Yugo/Ei (@ $55), a Russian (@ $32), and a Russian EL84M/7189 (@ $40).  Does anybody have any advice as to which one sounds best in an RM10?

Same deal with the 12AX7s.  The site has these versions: a Standard Grade (@ $30), a Low Noise (@ $45), and a Super Low Noise (@ $90).  In addition, each of these grades can be sourced from Yugoslavia, China, or Russia.  Which one should I get the for driver tubes of the RM10?  There is no mention of a grade A/B or B/A which I've heard talked about in this forum.

Also, I'm not sure whether these prices are per pair or per tube.

After I bought my RM10 I asked Roger what would be the best sounding & most reliable tubeset (for backups).  He replied NOS Sylvania 12AX7's & Ei EL84's.  When I called/emailed Sal at RAM Labs & posed the same question he said Ei 12AX7's & Gold Lion EL84's.  I would up buying Ei 12AX7's (standard grade is what he sold & sent me, $37.50/ea.) & Ei EL84's which is what I'm currently using.  Some guys really like the Gold Lion EL84's but I had bad luck w/their KT88's awhile back so I stuck w/the old reliable Ei's.  When you receive the tubes, the boxes will be clearly marked V1 thru V6 corresponding to the sockets matching each pair of EL84's & 12AX7's.  Best thing to do is email Sal & tell him you're retubing a RM10 & he'll set you up.
