My system is in the living room with lots of furniture. It's not 100% ideal, but this is where we hang out. My current speakers are Klipsch KG4s which sit pretty close to the floor. I feel like if they were 2ft higher I wouldn't be having any problems. What can I use to raise them up and still keep the nice connection to the hardwood floor?   I don't have a lot of options in my small city house.

Whatever I do, it needs to look nice and not be expensive.

How about a kitchen stool. Cheap and sturdy, since they have to hold $300+pounds

is it that the speaker drivers are actually being blocked by furniture - i.e.: you can't see the drivers from where you're listening?  or that you simply wish the drivers were up higher?  if the former, unless you get some really wide speakers - at least as wide as the ones you now have - they will likely be as easily knocked over as yours on suitable stands.  for a cheap fix, you can simply go to home despot and find suitable pavers - arrange them for a footprint as wide ass the speakers - and stack them.

or, if you can see the drivers from where you are listening, simply wedge something under their fronts, to tilt them back.  tilt them back as far as you can, w/o making them unstable.  i did this successfully w/similarly shaped sansui sp2500's.

or search pro-audio gear for low-to-the floor stands that will tilt your speakers.  like these:

Hi - late to this thread, but a cheap way to raise speakers is Besser (concrete) blocks. Clean them with a pressure hose and then paint them. From the sounds of it, two high will do what you want. Use a nice cloth over them if aesthetics are still an issue.

If you really want stability, cut a hole in the floorboards and use concrete post formers to build posts from bedrock. Take appropriate precautions if you live in a termite-risk area.

Thanks for the ideas. I know my set up is not totally ideal, but it's what works right now. Someday when the kids are teenagers they won't need the basement as a playroom and I can set up shop there.

Patio pavers might work, as long as they don't end up super heavy. The stereo is on the main floor with basement underneath, so I can't load it up with tons of weight. I can't see the drivers from where I sit. The left one is behind a chair which is easy to move. The right is behind a sofa arm which is much harder to move. The furniture kind of fits one way or not at all. I'll take a pic if I remember.

The Skylan stands at the end would be pretty easy to make out of wood. Hmmm.

What about buying some IKEA Lack end tables and putting the speakers on them? Would that material be really bad?

Take the drivers out, run bolts through the cabinets into the wall studs, put the drivers back in.  Done!

Or sell the kids.

I put the speakers up on chairs to test the height (18in). I think I'll be building stands if the wife approves! 1000000% improvement.

Not sure I can get birch lumber or not, but is that a well liked choice? I was thinking just 2x2 legs and a plywood top unless I can find some sort of stone top for cheap.
