Using phones again after a long hiatus.
« on: 7 Jan 2012, 02:44 pm »
I picked up a pair of HD 650's this week at a great price from a forum member.  Wow!  I wasn't prepared for all the detail I'd hear.  I'm just using the headphone amp in my Marantz PM11S1 right now and ordered a total airhead for travel.  This setup is so neutral that it makes me realize more than ever how important dealing with room reflections is with loudspeakers.

I'll be watching this subforum a lot more closely now as I plan to eventually buy a dedicated headphone amp for home.  Eclein...you've got me interested in the Schiit stuff    I tend to be a tube guy, so I'm also wondering about the Valhalla.

You will seriously need something more than the Airhead for those HD650s if those are also for travel, maybe a bad assumption on my part.  What other headphones you have for travel?

Well how about that Schiit!!! I helped somebody, very cool.  Hey I just got an Asgard for budgetary reasons but it drives my Hifiman HE-5LE's really well, really well so I'm glad I hung back a bit. I'll have a Valhalla in the future I think....I know I'm going to order the DAC again from my guy.

Just remember its fun and here are some brands to check out hibuck.....go and check out the head direct site I think it is--Hifiman stuff and my favorites for anything they have will be super sounding and high quality for cheap and thats Fiio!! Can't say enough about them..first amp was an E5, now an E11 for my mobile stuff and soon a new product E17 DAC/Amp for like $150ish and they are good. I love this area of the hobby as its within my cash flow...LOL...Enjoy Hibuck!!! Remember if it sounds good its good regardless of the reviews etc... holler if you need ny tips or want to BS about the whole thing!!! :thumb:
also head-fi is a great source, they are more fickle than we are with equipment-they sell it cheaply most of the time to get it GONE!!!   hahahaha.... :thumb: :thumb:

I also have some Klipsch "in-ear" phones and some AKG 240's.  I probably won't travel a lot with my best phones.  It's got to sound better than the ipod driving the phones.   I just put my GF-M2A3 integrated inline and it really lights up the midrange on the 650's, but the bass is a bit fatter/warmer than with the Marantz.
Hibuck....

Agreed, their F/S section is very interesting..
Have you considered a SS amp? i just upgraded to a HA-160Ds (amp/Dac) which is very neutral sounding with my headphones.
