DAMN! Webster Records is closing!
« on: 6 Jan 2012, 12:09 am »
Just heard it tonight.  That's a shame!  Found some wonderful recordings over the years, and their service and knowledge were great!

Sounds like I'll be making a few trips up I-44 to STL this month.  Maybe even starting Saturday.

Yes, this is too bad.  Several years ago I was interested in buying a business of my own and WR was for sale.  I didn't pursue it and the current owner made the purchase.  I'm sorry it didn't work out for them. . .I'll miss them.

Very sad. I think they were in business for around 58 years. I will have to go and pay my respects.

That is such a shame. Another victim of the econony and e-commerce. That is why it is important to support locally owned businesses even if it costs a few $ more. I hope someone buys them out. How about a mass gathering of GAS funds to start Gas Tunes Of Webstergroves?

Noble idea, but we'd eat all the profits by listening to all the recordings.

And who would determine what to stock?

It's a shame. I have to say with the demise of Classic 99 it doesn't surprise me that Webster followed. When we go to Powell, we are some of the youngest people there and as you know, we're north of 50.

I'm seeing the same thing with live theater too. We've got season tickets (with Bryan and Sue) for the Fox and that audience is getting up their too. We aren't seeing many 20 or 30 somethings there. We see the same thing in Chicago and New York theaters too.

I'm afraid pop is the only culture that will survive after we 'old farts' are gone  :(

Pop is hardly a culture..........

Just like our dear departed parents said when we were young. :duh:

Sad to hear that the Fox is not bringing in good crowds.  But I do believe people's attendance to live performances is cyclic, and tied to the economy.  What is hard is to see places not able to weather the storm, ride it out, into a more productive time.
Out here in Utah, they love movies, and theaters are just cropping up all over the place, especially with the demise of real film vs. digital.
I passed on this thread to my friend in Illinois, and I'll bet he will make a run to Webster as well.

Hi guys!! I spent quite a bit of time there today, visiting with my good friend Bill who has worked there for the last 10 years or so. I'm teaching at Bristol Elementary School, which is right around the corner, so I pass the store atleast a couple of times every week. I'm really ashamed to say that "passing " the store is part of what caused this. I am the reason Webster Records is closing, and I'm sorry that I didn't do something about it when I could have. Picking over the dead carcase for great deals isn't very noble of me, and I hope this teaches me something about supporting local businesses. Thanks Tim.

I was an infrequent visitor, but WR was the only place I could find a June Christy cd to play at my parent's wedding anniversary last Fall.

This afternoon the place was packed with geezers, so I guess I fit right in.

Dan, the previous owner, was there saying "Hi!" to all the loyal customers, and the only employee on hand was swamped.  Like a gathering of old friends, many folks stopped in to say "Thanks!" and share memories.  A class act all the way!

The sale is only two days only and I'd estimate 50% or more of the stick is GONE.  Goes through the month.  I spent $200 (at 30% off) and could have bought more.

Oh, man, that sucks large.  I've been to that store on a visit to St. Louis a long time ago.  Bought something but don't remember what.

I was there this morning right when they opened and picked up some nice vinyl.  The place was packed when I left at 11AM.

I hate to hear this, and a bit surprised as the place always seemed busy when I was there.  I think Classic 99 being ruined may have had an effect, it did for me because I'd hear stuff and know WR was the place to get it and know what I was talking about.  I didn't realize they began carrying vinyl again.

Just got back from Webster today. All new CD's are a buck and used ones .50 cents, Vinyl .25 cents. Most stuff is gone but I got around 40 cds and about 25 records and still came in under 50 bucks. I hate to see them go as it reminds me how much of a Dinosaur I have become.

I stopped by there on the way home tonight. It was getting very empty in there.
I'm getting too old to be carrying a foot high stack of records out of stores. :D
Sad to see them go!

WR -- RIP!

Question: Where will you shop now for music?
Euclid Records is a little east of WR. Euclid has a nice selection of new vinyl + a bunch of pre-owned, and some pricy collector stuff. Record Exchange down on S. Hampton.
Apop Records down on Cherokee, I haven't been there so I can't comment. Record shows a few times a year down on South Kingshiway.

Several months ago Bill at WR told me he had people bringing in so many records to sell / trade he had to turn them away. He either had multiple copies or knew they wouldn't sell, like pristine opera w/ no market for it. It's out there, more challenging to find it in good shape! Garage sales, Craigs list, the neighborhood church had a book / record / dvd sale which had some nice lp's.

There's also V-Stock now! Mostly pre-owned w/some new.

Welcome Aboard,

Joe
