flac player app for iphone?
« on: 4 Jan 2012, 09:47 pm »
Hi everyone.  Did a quick search search but didnt see an obvious answer.

So I just got an iPhone 4s, but all my music is flac.  Can anyone recommend a player app that will allow me to play flac on my iPhone?  i don't think iTunes will let me do this, right?

Thanks, Bob

I went through a similar line of questioning around 12-18 months ago, when I first picked up an iPod Touch.

Ultimately, I batch converted 800G of FLAC to apple lossless when the Mini, iPhone 4s (wife) and iPad (kids) hit the household.

There may now be apps.  I have found Head-Fi a good place to hunt down answers like this, they have an active PC based thread there.

Good luck!

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flac-player/id390532592?mt=8

I used it in a test to do 24/192 from ipad (USB camera kit) to my DAC.  Not a serious long term solution for me, just a test to prove 24/192 from IOS devices.  Sounded very good.  Anyway..plays FLAC.

Yeah, I have a gift cert for the itunes store, so looking at the "Flac PLayer" or "Golden Ear" apps.  Any experience with Golden Ear?

Follow up noob question:

When I open itunes, and try to import my music, it does not take the flac files I have.

Even if I add the "Flac Player" or another player to play flac files.....how do I add flac files to the library?

Also, how do I import other things, like spreadsheets, photos, documents, etc?

As I understand it.....everything must go through itunes.

Thanks!

BobC, iTunes does not support FLAC (as you posted initially).  Why are you asking again?  And iTunes is a music player, not for photos and spreadsheets.

My recommendation is to simply convert your FLAC to something iTunes and your iphone can handle, like Apple Lossless or AIFF.  Use MAx or another MAc based converter (or DB Poweramp if Windows).  Your iTunes gift card could be used for music, etc.

OK, I understand that an approach would be to convert my flac to wav or alac.

But that's a lot of files.

Would rather get a flac player app to read the flac files.

But need to know how to get the flac files onto the iphone if itunes cannot see them.

Why?  It's a ridiculous uphill battle, especially for a non-techy.  Just do a batch convert.  Likely when you wake up they are done.

But if you really want to stay FLAC then what I already sent you (FLAC player) is all you need.  Adding files is clearly spelled out..a bit of a hassle at first, but then, you have decided to go the road less traveled

Thanks, Ted.  So, how does one do a batch convert?  Use dbpoweramp?  I assume I need to buy the full $38 version versus the basic free version I found online a few years ago?

Have a search in the Apple Circle.  I did batch conversion with the free DB, and discussed it.  Pretty simple too!

If your on osx your pics and spreadsheets should be in iphoto and iworks and then you can sync them with your iphone via icloud or in itunes.

Followed Ted's advice.  Bought dbpoweramp and it works well.  Copied my flac library into a parallel ALAC library within iTunes.  So far so good.
