problem with Mac Mini toslink connection ...
« on: 4 Jan 2012, 06:22 pm »
My 2008(?) Mac Mini Intel Core Duo running OSX Leopard 10.5.8 is not working through its toslink connection to my DAC.

The cable is a VanDenHul Optilink mini optical to toslink cable

Red light shows on the toslink end which connects to the DAC but no sound

Other toslink components when run to same jack on DAC work fine

No way to test the VDH with other components as nothing else uses a mini optical connection on the source end

I do get sound from headphones when connected to the headphone/optical jack on the mini

The mini menu for sound shows toslink as the output when the VDH cable is connected

No sound from itunes or any websites with sound

any ideas???

thx in advance!

Which DAC?

...does it require a certain bit rate? I wonder if some DACs are picky*? Does it have a signal Lock indicator in the front panel?

What is the cable length?

try wiggling both ends of the Toslink connector? …I've had the connector appear seated but wasn't when connected to an A/V receiver, to the signal was not getting through

* I just tested my setup….In the MacOS Audio Midi Setup I can switch to all bit rates and sampling rates and my old Monarchy DAC works. Using a monoprice TOSlink cable BTW.

this is a new problem ... previously worked fine

not a DAC per se as much as a power DAC ... it is a Lyngdorf TDAi2200 digital integrated amp (very similar to the Tact Audio amps)

I did unplugged the cable from both the mini and DAC/amp but no change on reinsertion

thx for the message though ... keep the suggestions coming!

Have you checked the Audio Midi setup  ( Applications>Utilities> Audio MIDI ) to be sure you have the correct device/settings chosen?

Do you have another Toslink cable to try?

I do not have another mini to toslink cable to try ... I DO have a toslink to toslink cable that works fine with a Sangean tuner to the same input on the DAC.  I will purchase an adapter and see if this fixes the issue

I have my doubts though as the cable is passing light ... glows red on DAC end

weird!

Thx

I wonder if some DACs are picky*?

Some DACs are picky about the optical signal they receive.  Some cases in point:

1. An iMac G5 optical out to a Perpetual Technologies P3A DAC - the Mini-Toslink to Toslink cable (no adapter) had a red light at the end of the cable and the Mac's audio properties were correctly set, but no sound.  Turns out the Mac and cable produced sound when connected to the optical input of a Sony pre-pro.  Help with iMac G5 to Perpetual Technologies P3A toslink problem

2. A friend's Visio soundbar would not produce any sound with the optical output from a Panasonic plasma TV.  The DVD player's optical output plugged into the soundbar would produce sound, and the Panasonic TV's optical output plugged into his AV receiver would produce sound.

3. Some high jitter sources like the Apple Airport Express N often would result in either no sound or sound with dropouts when plugged into DACs using the ESS Sabre 32 DAC chip (unless one of the inputs was modified with a "reduced jitter aperature" setting to accomodate the Airport Express as was done with the Peachtree Audio integrateds and DACs).

I think we should exhaust all posibilities of audio settings, cables, connectors, etc., but in the end some optical digital audio combos are just not going to work.  After the basics are checked, the best troubleshooting is going to be plugging the optical source and cable either into another DAC or AV processor/receiver.

In Jeff's case though, it is rather odd because it was working originally.  Hopefully a replacement Mini-Toslink to Toslink cable (preferred) or an adapter on a known working standard cable will be the answer to his problem.

purchasing a SUPER cheap mini/toslink adapter to try ... anyone ever have a defective adapter???

also can anyone think of a scenario where an optical cable will pass light but NOT work when connected to a Toslink input that has been tested and is working with a different cable and source???

thx

oops wish I had read Steve's post before posting mine ... my situation is odd though given the fact that it had been working and then stopped with no system change or software change

I am considering updating to Snow Leopard to see if this would help in anyway ... opinions???
