What to do with acoustic foam?
« on: 2 Jan 2012, 11:17 pm »
I have recently come into possession of 2, 6' by 8' pieces of acoustic foam (free). I'm sure my room probably needs some help, but I'm not sure where to apply this, or even if it is the right thing for my room.

My room is 14' by 19'. My speakers are on the 14' wall about 3' away from back wall and about 2.5' in from the side walls.

My listening position is about 10' back with about 3' feet behind me.

All walls are hard surface and the floor is hard wood.

Not sure if this is enough info to go on, but if anyone has any wise words they'll be appreciated.

A lot of trial and error have gone into the positioning to get reasonable sound.

Corners and reflection points are the play areas.
So upper corners behind speakers, the wall meets ceiling edge above behind speakers. Middle of wall behind speakers
Then the point where if a mirror was on wall you could see speaker from listening position via mirror. That is the reflection point.
Behind listening position head high.
Not that these are the only places.. just the primary ones to start playing around.

I'd try it in the corners first, then at any room boundries (ie wall/ceiling, wall/floor).  If the sound gets too "dry", try covering the front side with paper or plastic sheeting.

Most foam isn't that great.  How thick is it?  You may be better off cutting it into smaller pieces and using multiple layers to increase the thickness.

I used Auralex foam and have it all on the wall behind the speakers - see my gallery.

In each corner and along the top ceiling/wall corner I used Auralex LENRD bass traps. The rest is VENUS panels (12" deep) and Wedges (4" deep). I tried using some on the ceiling and side walls to deal with reflections there. On the ceiling it made no difference and I prefered the sound WITH side wall reflections. My chair is high enough at the back to prevent any possible back wall reflections and again, I put some foam on the back wall in case of reflections from that, then off the equipment and to my ears, but I could detect no difference.

I have carpet on the floor between the speakers and listening chair and I think that is important.

I should add that I use a digital equaliser.

I would put 2-3 2'x4' pieces behind your speakers.
2 2'x4' at first reflection points on the side walls.
1 4'x6' piece double thickness behind my head.
Find a thick rug for the floor.
See how that works.

If you have a TV between the speakers save a piece or two for that as well.
