Save yourself some frustration and replace it with a non-DLink product.  Having to reboot them frequently is a universal issue with their routers as they age (due to poor heat dissipation) and a sign of impending failure.  I speak as a former DLink owner.

I was using that router without issues. Who is your ISP provider - do you have a cable modem then  your router?

What firmware is your Dlink running - latest can be found here http://www.dlink.com/DIR-655 under support resources.

The router is about 3 years old and I have never updated the firmware it is 1.21,  2008/11/13 .

My provider is "cogeco" my local cable company and I just recently I moved to cable phone service
for bundling purposes, so I got a new cable modem that has both internet and telephone ...
My problems started after this but after repeated calls to the cable company they keep telling  me that the modem is fine and it's a router issue...
All I have to do is cycle the power on the router and the connection comes back again...
The reason I want to stay with Dlink is that I also have an access point, media bridge and a streaming device(Boxee Box) all made by Dlink...

I would take it in babysteps then -
Update the firmware to see if that resolves the issue but make sure you backup your settings on the router ahead of time.

Then go from that.

I used to have a full DLink stack of devices on my network.  The only items that remain are the two DAP-1522 media bridges that continue to work well and interop with my Netgear wireless-N router.

I think you will find that firmware upgrades do not resolve your issue, but that would be the place to start especially if you don't mind spinning your wheels.

Have you tried replacing the ethernet cable between the devices?  May be something stupid like that.

Anyway, if it really is your DLINK router/AP behaving poorly due to age, I see no reason why you must stick with DLINK regardless of who makes your Boxee or media bridge.

I had a D-Link Di-624 that started to require rebooting.  I was able to upgrade the firmware (well at least to a 2008 version anyway!) and played with a variety of settings, but nothing helped so I retired it and got a Netgear.

Like others have said, try the firmware update, but if you can't get it to work properly after your due diligence, it may be time to move on.

I have swapped cables around with no better luck...
I don't think it's a heat related problem as the router is located in an open space and the failures are quite random, sometimes the connection will fail and when I use the windows troubleshooting it reconnects onlt to fail again a couple of minutes later....One time windows generated a log that said something about a "DNS failure"...
I had just added the 1513 media bridge recently and thought maybe some settings need to be changed in the 655 to make them play nice....

If it is time to replace the router, any suggestions on something better to get??

Before you totally give up on it try flashing it with DD-WRT or Tomato. I had a Linksys that kept losing it's connection and had to be reset and reloaded from scratch until I switched it over to DD-WRT.

If you have to buy a new one call your ISP and see if they recommend or sell one. That might be an easy solution. The Apple Airport Extreme is rock solid but $180...ouch!

So what physical devices changed in your setup once your problems started?

I would try the firmware -

I recently bought a Netgear WNDR3800 and a few of us ran into issues of dropped connections where a firmware update fixed it.

The the only physical change is the new modem with built in phone
connection. My connection chain goes: modem>Dlink 655>dilink 615
and my desktop pc, all wired connection.Wireless devices include:
Dlink dap 1315 media bridge, xbox 360, boxee box, fta receiver,
2 squeezeboxes and a toshiba laptop.
My sons ipods and phones(blackberry) come in and out of the netwok

So the problem started after you added this new modem into the mix from the cable company?

What type of modem is it - name/model number?

You might want to switch your DNS provider to Google.  I don't think this will resolve your problem but it's worth a try and it will likely improve your performance while you have a good connection.

Ok, I upgraded my firmware and changed the DNS server settings in the router...
Now I'll wait and see what happens...

As an IT professional and former D-Link RMA QA tester, I agree.  Their products are junk.

That said, you are likely run into these problems with any consumer grade router eventually -- Netgear, Linksys, etc. albeit to varying degrees.

I was having some serious cable connection issues. I exchanged my cable modem for a newer version at one of the TWCable offices - i think I have had it since 2006!

They have upgraded the TWC network here to handle the much faster speeds, so a newer modem was almost a requirement.

Still problems, so i began suspecting my DIR-655. I had a new drop from the telephone pole a few years back so that was my least concern.

Turns out my DIR-655 could not keep time! It could not get time sync from the internet   So I had it copy time from my PC - a day later it had hardly changed the time  Not good! If you know anything about TCP and packets and how routers everywhere work, you know that timekeeping is essential (hence NTP).

I am not sure this was a critical issue for my cable connection - I think the cable modem handles the essential timekeeping for that. But the lack of any kind of time keeping ability drove me to get a new router/switch/wireless - the new and improved Apple Airport Extreme 5th gen. I just wanted to eliminate the D-Link from this ugly problem I was having.

Still had problems even with the new router and new cable modem - it turns out I had problems in the back yard, the cable had gotten crimped from some construction apparently. I have a new drop and things are better, but I still have an issue. it appears to be under/inside the house so i will be getting a new outlet wired for the downstairs - upstairs seems fine, but downstairs is where the media/computing center is.

My brother-in-law agrees with many of you that D-Link is to be avoided, based on his work with routers/embedded systems and NTP a few years ago and some info he had read on D-Link issues. I will be searching for some of the documents he has read about issues with them. Kimchee411 I would be interested in any info you may have also. It's to bad, I really liked D-Links' style and other than the timekeeping I had no other issues with this DIR-655.

I will probably sell my Apple router once I have researched the newer generations of more configurable routers and when the new speeds become more standard.

By the way there is a very cool free app for iOS called Emerald Sequoia "Time"
